COME TO THE TABLE. Acrylic on canvas.
This painting imagines the Table that Christ invites us to here on earth: his church, an imperfect shadow of the true table that our King has prepared for us one day. Bread is broken, wine is poured, yet plates are still awaiting the feast being prepared. Life happens around the table. Jesus spent many moments of his ministry sharing a table with people from all walks of life and every kind of need, seen or unseen.
Around a table, stories are shared, traditions passed down. Pleasant aromas fill the air, hands pass food, eyes dance. The buzz of conversation, the roar of laughter; the silence of grief, the tears of sorrow. When we come to dine, we share our lives and give ourselves to each other in community.
Accept the invitation to a seat at the table of the church. Allow the painting to help you see the beauty in the imperfect, incomplete, at-times-messy table of the church, and to stir in your heart a longing to dine at the table where every need is met and every tear dried up. At the center of the table is Christ himself — the Bread of Life.
Around that heavenly table, every painful moment that has happened around an earthly table will be redeemed and restored to perfect beauty. One day, rather than candles, the table will be illuminated by Christ himself. Let the painting help you imagine this homecoming feast. On earth, the table satisfies our hunger. One day, our deepest need, perfect union with our Creator God, will be finally satisfied in full.
