Super!
What is the message of Christianity?
What is the Christian preacher commissioned to preach?
Is he sent in order to give his own views about various subjects, about politics and international affairs?
Is that Christianity?
Is it having a Christian view of this, that or the other?
No! Primarily the preaching of this message is whom we preach': this blessed person!
"To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: whom we preach..? (vv. 27-28).
There is only one whom we preach! And God forbid that I or anybody else should ever preach anything but this blessed person! 'We preach not ourselves,' says Paul to the Corinthians, 'but Christ Jesus the Lord' (2 Cor 4:5). I am not here to talk about myself or to tell you stories about myself or anybody else. I am here to sing,
My great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of his grace!
-Charles Wesley
Christianity consists of the amazing proclamation that God 'hath visited and redeemed his people' (Lk 1:68). 'God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son' (Jn 3:16) - that is it! It is all about him, this person, and the facts concerning him. Who is he? That is where you must begin.
We have not started with Christianity until we have confronted this Jesus, this baby who was born in Bethlehem and brought up in Nazareth; the man who worked as a carpenter for all those years; the young man who began to preach at the age of thirty; who worked those miracles; who died upon a cross; who was buried in a grave; and who rose again. That is Christianity - this person!
