I'm reading a book on preaching by Steven Smith. He writes about a text-driven sermon. He highlights that the text (including genre) determines the sermon's content. He warns of the danger of NOT letting the text drive the sermon in this sobering quote:

"This is the real problem. Avoiding the meaning of the text is not lying to people, but it prepares people to accept lies. People can sit under our preaching for years and not know basic Bible doctrine because we have reduced difficult, rich, meaningful texts to a compilation of practical points for living. Our sheep are vulnerable because our people do not know the Word, sitting under preachers who extract “points” from one text, call it exposition, but never deal with the text in context. So what’s worse, the preacher who tells lies, or the preacher who will not preach the truth? The former is a false prophet; the latter is a negligent shepherd?” ~ Steven Smith, Recapturing the Voice of God

I have a friend who wrote a book called "Prayer Sparks." I have been working my way through it and have really enjoyed how simply it directs you to pray based on what you read in Scripture. It is based on the Gospel of Mark.
