Big Boy No. 4014 is still rolling through Pennsylvania, and this is one of those rare moments where even people who “aren’t train people” suddenly become train people for the day. After Reading and Pottstown on July 2, the giant steam locomotive heads toward Philadelphia, where it will be on display July 4 and July 5 near Intrepid Avenue and League Island Boulevard as part of the America 250 celebration. Then it keeps moving across the state with stops in Lebanon on July 7, Lewistown and Altoona on July 8, and a big public display in Altoona on July 9 and July 10.

After that, Big Boy heads through some serious Pennsylvania rail country, including a sold-out ticketed stop at Horseshoe Curve on July 11, followed by Cresson and Leetsdale before leaving Pennsylvania from Conway on July 12. It is the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, and seeing it in person is a whole different thing than just watching a video. It is loud, historic, massive, and probably the only thing in Pennsylvania this week big enough to make a pothole feel insecure. Just remember to stay back from the tracks, respect private property, and enjoy it safely, because nobody wants their Big Boy memory to involve a police report and a bad Facebook comment section.
