Today’s sermon for Trinity 14 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Almena, Wisconsin.

In Luke 17, ten lepers cry out to Jesus for mercy and all ten are cleansed. Yet only one returns, and to him Jesus says, “Your faith has saved you.” What is the difference between receiving God’s gifts and receiving Christ Himself by faith? And does the Samaritan’s thanksgiving earn him anyt...

Today’s sermon at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Almena, Wisconsin.

We spend a remarkable amount of our lives trying to justify ourselves. We explain. We defend. We compare. We replay the argument in our heads. We want other people to understand that we were right - or at least that we weren’t really wrong. In Luke 10, the lawyer who questions Jesus does the same ...

Lord Jesus, I find in myself and in the entire human race the distress that befell the man who went from Jerusalem to Jericho. And I confess, with pain and tears of heart, that I, through sin, have fallen among the murderous, hellish spirits—the devil, death, and every evil—who have stripped me of my clothing and ornament, that is, of Your gifts and of Your glorious image, and have miserably wounded me and left me half dead. Moreover, there is no creature in heaven or on earth who could be of counsel or comfort to me under such grievous harm, until You, the faithful Samaritan and heavenly doctor, have taken me up along with the entire human race out of pure love. Today I speak praise and thanksgiving for Your joyous incarnation, bitter suffering and death, glorious resurrection, ascension, and abundant outpouring of Your Spirit of all grace and supplication, and I ask that You would further lift and carry me upon the shoulders of Your grace and preserve me in the lodging of Your dear Church. O grant that I may enjoy the benefit of the two denarii that You have paid, and earnestly obey in Your name the faithful innkeepers and undershepherds of Your Word to whom You have commended me. Finally, guide me, poor and miserable as I am, from the grievous lodging of this vale of misery, so that I may gaze upon Your abode and praise You in eternity, You who live with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, true God, now and forever. Amen.
