But I said, ‘I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;
yet surely my cause is with the LORD,
and my reward with my God.’ Isaiah 49:4

I distinctly remember my first big ministry failure. It was many years ago at my first church. It was an event that we planned for families and youth. Two other churches were involved as well. We had put together our plans, prepared materials, had snacks there… and then, nobody showed. Not a single person. Zero. And I remember one of my colleagues saying, “well, we celebrate the labors if not the fruits.” To be honest, I found the comment to be small consolation at the time, but over the years, it has resonated with me more and I have come to see more and more the truth of it.

In whatever we do, in ministry or in any other field or activity, we don’t always see the fruits of our labors. We work hard at something, but it just doesn’t bring about what we had hoped for. And we are a results oriented world and culture. And so to not see immediate results – or maybe even results at all – can be disheartening.

But so often how things work out can be out of our control. We don’t determine what fruit comes about. And yes, the work and the efforts are to be celebrated. Because they have been done in good faith and to the best of our abilities. And besides, we never know what impact our efforts can make down the line. We may have planted some seed that will take root and grow at some point in the future. And perhaps we will not even be able to see it one day bear fruit. And even if those seeds never bear fruit, we probably have learned and grown in some way through what we have done. And we trust that God has been at work bringing about his good purpose through our efforts.

Prayer: Eternal God, it can be disappointing to not see our work always produce results. But we trust that we labor to your glory and that you are at work in all that we do. For we pray through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:39

The other day I was at a meeting for pastors and other church leaders. And we started the meeting with devotions. What a great way to start a meeting. We should take time to do that more often, I thought.

But our devotion started with a reflection on the question, “who is my neighbor?” There were a lot of great reflections on the question – from the idea of broadening our idea of “neighbor” to “people who are in need,” to “people we often ignore or look past or neglect.”

But one person’s response was something that caused me to look at things in a little different way. She said that she tried to look at others as not only neighbors but as someone that God was going to bless her with. She tried to see not only how she might have an impact on their life – but how they might have an impact on hers. Is this person in front of me a possible friend, a conversation partner, a fellow helper or someone who could in some other way make a difference in her life?

To look at others like that takes a little more risk or vulnerability, because you aren’t just opening yourself up to give of yourself to them – but you are opening yourself up to how they might make an impact in your life.

Prayer: Gracious God, you bless us with one another, and you place people in our lives who befriend us and are a help to us. Make us open to the blessings that you want to give us through others, especially newcomers. For we pray in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

I am grateful to God,
whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did,
as I remember you constantly in my prayers, night and day. 2 Timothy 1:3

I have been told at different times by people that they are praying for me. Maybe it was when I got married or was ordained, or became a parent, or started at a new church or lost a family member… whatever it is people have said that they are praying for me. And it really does mean a lot. To know that someone takes time and brings you before God’s throne of grace is a powerful thing.

When we approach God in prayer, we pray for many different things. We pray for ourselves and about the things that we are facing. We pray for our family and for all of those closest to us. We pray for our world and for peace and for the health and well-being of those in need. And we pray for those that we know in our lives who are in special need of prayer. We lift them before God, and we ask for God’s presence, strength, healing and peace to be with them. And we join with others who are doing the same thing for them. We join in a community of prayer that surrounds them and sustains them through what they are going through.

We do not control or know what exactly those prayers will bring about. But we know they are effective. They are effective before God and they are effective in drawing us together in prayer and in encouraging those who know they are being prayed for.
So take a moment today and think of someone who you know who is in need of prayer. Pray for them, and then don’t hesitate to let them know that you are praying for them. It makes a difference.

Prayer: Loving God, you ask us to pray for every good thing. Encourage us in our prayers for one another, so that we might all come to know your grace and your healing more and more in our lives. For we pray in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

I will thoroughly purge your dross and remove all your impurities." Isaiah 1:25

Recently I saw the transcript of an interview with someone who is facing terminal cancer. He has always been a person of faith, but facing the end of his earthly life has helped to put things more into perspective for him.

One thing he spoke about is how this experience has been a time of learning about himself and about his faith – and how it has been a time of spiritual growth for him. He would not want to wish what he has gone through on anyone, but through this experience, he has been able to focus more on what is truly important – and his faith has been strengthened.

I thought his response was especially meaningful when he asked whether he was angry at God for not answering prayers for bodily healing. He said: “I wouldn’t want a sovereign God to defer to all of my prayers with a yes. I’m not omniscient. I don’t know what the weaving together of the tapestry of full redemption should look like, but I know going through the period of suffering that I’m going through is a benefit because it is a winnowing.
I’m filled with dross. This suffering is not salvific, but it’s sanctifying, and I’m grateful for it.”

He talks here about a “winnowing.” That is kind of an old-fashioned word from the world of farming that has to do with using the wind to separate the good grain from the lighter weeds. It means to separate out what is necessary from the waste. And that is what this man sees happening in his life.

I thought what he said was important – and a good reminder of how in our lives we keep too much of what is harmful or unnecessary with us. None of us wants to experience what he has experienced, but his witness is a reminder to focus on the good and the most important in our own lives too.

Prayer: Eternal God, remove in us what keeps us from faithfulness and lovingkindness. For we pray in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15-16

Today in the church calendar, we remember an early Christian named Justin Martyr. He is given that name because he was a martyr for the faith. He died around 165 AD after refusing to renounce Christ.

Justin wasn’t born a Christian, but later came to faith after an important conversation that he had with an elderly Christian man. Justin was studying different philosophies and trying to figure out which one would lead him to truth and the right direction for his life. It was during this time of searching that he had a seemingly random encounter and conversation with this Christian man. That conversation led Justin to faith.

Justin Martyr is remembered in the church because of his faithful witness and many writings defending the Christian faith. But it all started with that one conversation that he had with someone who was willing to sit down with him and share his faith.

We never know the impact that we can make with someone when we take the time to talk with them and have a meaningful conversation. It can make a difference, far beyond what we can imagine – especially when we are able in some way to share the love of Christ with them.

Prayer: Gracious God, help us to reach out to others in genuine conversation and to share the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, for it is in his name that we pray. Amen.

11‘Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods?
Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
awesome in splendor, doing wonders? Exodus 15:11

The other day I was reading in a magazine about how a high school student asked for some special accommodations for religious reasons. The student claimed to be an adherent to an ancient pagan god, and as such wanted certain freedoms when it came to the school day. Even though it was a true story, it ended up in the “humor” section of the publication. We don’t quite take things like that too seriously…

And while you do see this kind of thing once in a while, it doesn’t seem like it is a great temptation for us to start worshiping pagan gods. We aren’t tempted to worship and serve some of the ancient gods of say the Egyptians or Babylonians.

But yet, there are other “gods” that we are tempted with, aren’t there? There are false idols in our lives. There are things that we give our allegiance to or place our trust in that are not worthy of those things.

And let’s think of those for a moment as we look at this verse from Exodus where it talks about worshiping the one true God. “Who is like you, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in splendor, doing wonders?” And as we read this verse we see again why all of these tempting “idols” in our lives fall short. They are not “holy” or “full of majesty.” They do no “wonders.” They don’t miraculously provide the blessings of each day for us. They are earthly and limited and often full of false promises for us.

They lure us away because they seem to offer gratification or a sense of power or security. But they don’t deliver – especially in any lasting way.

And so we return to the Lord. And we find that in our God, we have the one who is truly worthy of honor, praise, worship and trust.

Prayer: Loving God, turn us away from any “idols” in our lives and turn us again to worship and serve you. For we pray in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
