Chapter 6
“Work is a privilege. It is the gift of God. But it is also a commandment and a duty. God has given it to us to make us complete men and women.”

“It is sometimes sadly true that the real problem we may face in coming to know the Lord’s will for our lives is that we have difficulty in accepting ourselves. We want to be different from what God has created us to be.”

“We do not live or die to ourselves, but to the Lord and his will. He understands what he is doing. If at first sight he narrows the possibilities for our lives to the very mundane, we can trust him.”

“The will of the Lord for sinners in a sinful world is not always straightforward. It is not guaranteed to be easy. It must always, ultimately, be costly.”

Calvary’s own “DJ Anilonis” is launching a podcast to address the big questions his generation is asking. (Spoiler: It isn’t the first generation to have asked them.) Check out this first pilot episode (including Pastor Tom as token old guy) that dives into the deep end of the pool and addresses the question of evil and suffering!

Chapter 5

“Is it lawful? Is it helpful? Is it enslaving? Is it consistent with the Lordship of Christ? Is it helpful to others? Is it consistent with the example of Christ and the apostles?“

“…no action which is contrary to the plain Word of God can ever be legitimate for the Christian. No appeal to spiritual freedom or to providential circumstances can ever make what is ethically wrong anything else but sinful. For the Christian is free only to love and obey the law of God. Therein lies his true freedom.“

“There is, for example, presumably no built-in evil about owning a new car, or living in a pleasant house, or enjoying various foods, spending time in various pursuits, or with certain kinds of people. But when we cannot be content without them; when we simply must have them—they are no longer our liberties, but our chains.”
