THE STRENGTH IN OUR AFFLICTIONS...
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)
Those afflictions we carry over time. The illnesses, the discomfort, the aches and pains that seem to follow us through life. Too often, we look at these things as weaknesses. We begin to believe that something must be wrong with us because we are struggling.
And sadly, modern Christianity can sometimes leave people feeling as though their suffering is a reflection of their faith. As if enough faith should mean no sickness, no pain, and no hardship.
But open your Bible!
Look at Job, who suffered beyond what most of us could imagine. Look at Paul, who pleaded with the Lord to remove his thorn in the flesh, yet was told that God's grace was sufficient. Look at Timothy, who struggled with frequent ailments. Look at the many servants of God who endured trials, afflictions, and hardships along their journey.
Their afflictions did not disqualify them from serving God.
Sometimes, the very things we wish God would remove become the things through which He teaches us patience, deepens our compassion, strengthens our testimony, and reminds us how much we depend on Him.
Now, that doesn't mean every illness is a blessing or that we should pretend our suffering doesn't hurt. Even Paul asked for relief. Even Job cried out in anguish. Faith does not mean we never struggle. Sometimes, faith is simply continuing to trust God while the struggle remains.
So perhaps the question isn't always, “Why am I going through this?”
Perhaps we ought to ask ourselves, “What will I make of what I'm going through?”
Will we allow our afflictions to make us bitter, or will we allow God to use them to make us more compassionate? Will we let our discomfort become our excuse, or will we continue to serve Him with whatever strength we have left?
Church, your scars are not proof that God has abandoned you. Your struggles are not a measurement of how little faith you possess.
Sometimes, the strongest testimony doesn't come from the person who was spared the fire, but from the one who walked through it and still has a praise on their lips.
You may not have been healed of every affliction, but that does not mean God cannot work through your life.
So don't measure your faith by the absence of suffering. Measure your walk by the One you continue to trust in the midst of it.
Because our weakness does not have to be the end of our testimony.
In the hands of God, even our afflictions can become a testimony of His sustaining grace.
