Pilgrim Covenant Church

Pilgrim Covenant Church Pilgrim Covenant Church is a Reformed and Presbyterian Church in Singapore, standing firmly in the tradition of the Westminster Standards.

Pilgrim Covenant Church (PCC) is a Reformed Presbyterian Church founded on 4 July 1999 in Singapore. Though we desire by the mercies of God, to grow eventually into a Presbyterian fellowship of congregations, we are at the moment a small congregation of about 35 families and numerous individuals covenanted to serve and worship the Lord together as a branch of the body of Christ. On a typical Lord'

s Day (Sunday) about 150 souls (comprising members and their children and visitors) would gather to worship the Lord. As a church we do believe, uphold and practice the truth of the Holy Scriptures which is expressed in the Westminster Confessional Standards as agreed upon by the Westminster Assembly of divines on 4 Dec 1646 and originally adopted by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on Aug 27, 1647. We warmly welcome you to join us in our Sabbath Worship Services and to search the Scriptures with us to understand why we live and worship the way we do. If, by the grace of God, you are convicted of the biblical way of life and worship which we believe is taught in God's Word, then we would humbly invite you to join us to serve the Lord together that we may glorify and enjoy Him together. Our morning and evening worship services start at 9.30 am and 5.30 pm respectively. Prayer Meetings are held on every Friday night (with the exception of Singapore public holidays) at 8.00 pm and will include a short exposition of God's Word.

7.3 Man, by his fall, having made himself incapable of life by that covenant, the Lord was pleased to hear from a second, 1 commonly called the covenant of grace; wherein He freely offereth unto sinners life and salvation by Jesus Christ; requiring of them faith in Him, that they may be saved,2 and promising to give unto all those that are ordained unto eternal life His Holy Spirit, to make them willing, and able to believe.3

1 Gal 3:21; Rom 8:3; 3:2021; Gen 3:15; Isa 42:6; 2 Mk 16:15, 16; Jn 3:16; Rom 10:6, 9; Gal 3:11; 3 Ezk 36:2627; Jn 6:4445.

We saw in the previous paragraph of our Confession that the first covenant that God made with man was the Covenant of Works wherein life was promised to Adam and in him to his posterity, upon condition of perfect and personal obedience. But as we read in Genesis 3, Adam failed to fulfil the condition of the covenant, and thus he and all mankind descending from him by ordinary generation (WSC 16) became incapable of life by that covenant.

But all is not lost, for there is a man who did not descend from Adam by ordinary generation, even Jesus Christ. Indeed, it has been Gods plan from all eternity, that in the fullness of time, Christ should take on human nature, and fulfil the Covenant of Works on behalf of the elect, and at the same time suffer and die for them to pay the penalty due to them because of the guilt of Adam imputed to them. Christ, in other words, would be the second Adam ( WLC 31; cf. 1 Cor 15:45). He would represent not all mankind, but all his elect so that as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life (Rom 5:18). Now, since those who are covenantally represented by Christ do not need to work to obtain life, but are graciously conferred life because of the righteousness of Christ, this covenant that they are entered into, is commonly called the Covenant of Grace.

Take careful note that the Covenant of Grace is not really Plan B that was put into place when Plan A, the Covenant of Works, failed. It is rather part of Gods eternal plan for the salvation of His elect. The Scripture confirms this by calling the blood of Christ shed on the Cross, the blood of the everlasting covenant (Heb 13:20). So the Covenant of Grace logically precedes the Covenant of Works even though the former was implemented in redemptive history for the salvation of Gods people only after the Fall. Thus, it was after the Fall that God declared the Gospel that is founded on the Covenant of Grace in His words to the serpent, Genesis 3:15, And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. The seed of the woman clearly refers to Christ, who would be born of a virgin. He would crush the head of the serpent even as it bruised His heel on the Cross of Calvary. Nevertheless, it is essential that those whom Christ represented in the Covenant of Grace be brought into conscious enjoyment of their covenant relationship with God in the fullness of time. And God has appointed that these should come into the relationship by faith in Christ their covenant head.

This is why we are given to confess that under the Covenant of Grace, life and salvation is freely offered unto sinners, requiring of them faith in Him, that they may be saved. But take note that this faith is not really the condition of the covenant, for the condition of the Covenant of Grace is to fulfil the Covenant of Works and to pay for the penalty due to its violation for the elect. Christ fulfilled this condition. Faith, rather, is part of the blessing or promise of the Covenant of Grace which Christ procured for the elect as a virtue to be wrought by the Holy Spirit to make them willing, and able to believe.

Chapter 7:2 : Of God's Covenant With Man
We noted previously how God has condescended to deal with man by way of covenant. This is because man could not otherwise have any fruition and blessedness in God due to the infinite distance between God and man. But if this is the case, how do we explain the fact that God appears to deal with our first parents, Adam and Eve, simply and directly without any covenant provisions? The answer is that it only appears to be not a covenantal interaction because the word “covenant” is not use in the account in the first three chapters of Genesis. But the reality is that all the elements of a covenant relationship are present. Every covenant has four essential elements: (1) Parties; (2) Conditions; (3) Blessing; and (4) Curse. The parties in this case are clear. They are God on the one hand and Adam representing all mankind on the other hand. We know that Adam was standing as a representative of all mankind because these were spoken to him before anyone else, include Eve, came into existence. The condition is set by God for Adam: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Gen 2:17). Since, “the tree was good for food” (Gen 3:6), we know that the prohibition is actually simple test of perfect and personal obedience to God simply because he is God. If Adam passes this test, then we can expect him to obey all of God's commandments. The curse is explicit: Adam and his posterity would die if he fails this test. They would die spiritually, bodily and eternally. Conversely, the blessing is implied, even life everlasting as signified by the Tree of Life which was available to Adam to eat thereof. So we see that all essential elements of a covenant are present in God's dealing with Adam. This is confirmed by other passages of Scripture. For examples, Hosea 6:7 may be better rendered: “They like Adam have transgressed the covenant.” Likewise, the parallel which the Apostle Paul draws between Adam and Christ in Romans 5:12–21, in connection with justification, can only be explained on the assumption that Adam, like Christ, is the head of a covenant party. Just as Adam's sin was imputed on his posterity whom he represented, Christ's righteousness is imputed on the elect whom he represented. Theologically, moreover, Adam could not have merited life by obedience except God condescended to reward him with it via a covenant agreement. Since this covenant requires Adam to keep God's commandments to obtain life, theologians call it a Covenant of Works or a Covenant of Life. Thus we are given to confess “The first covenant made with man was a covenant of works, wherein life was promised to Adam; and in him to his posterity, upon condition of perfect and personal obedience.”
