We launched a microsite on Singapore Indian Muslims in August 2023, with the aim of profiling the many facets of the Singapore Indian Muslim community. This project seeks to highlight our humble contributions to Singapore, while also educating others about our culture, traditions, and more.

https://www.mpositive.in/tag/singapore-indian-muslim-community/

This post is an open invitation to anyone who knows of Singapore Indian Muslims who have made significant, newsworthy contributions to our community. We are keen to update the site and feature individuals who deserve recognition.

The criteria are straightforward: as long as there is a minimum of at least 3 third‑party news report or published article about the person available and is currently available online, you may send the details to [email protected].

For example, the late J. M. Sallih, a prolific poet awarded the Cultural Medallion in 2012, is featured with links to the National Library, which carries his publications and newspaper articles on his literary achievements.

The SNN team visited Mr Jaafar it was such a hilarious visit with his jovial character. He is a truly cheerful gentleman. His laughter filled the entire flat as we sat down to chat about his life.

Mr Jaafar is in his early 70s. He is a first-generation Singaporean born to immigrant parents. He is a total joy to hang out with.

He started his education journey at Telok Ayer Primary School. Later, he moved on to Bukit Ho Swee Secondary School. However, his school days ended suddenly because of family circumstances. He had to grow up fast and start working to help out.

Life wasn't always easy, but Mr Jaafar stayed busy. After working several odd jobs, he served his National Service in the Vigilante Corps.

His work ethic is incredible. For 50 years, he worked a full-time job. At the same time, he also ran his own business as a side hustle! He only retired two years ago.

Now that he is fully retired, he doesn't just sit around. He keeps himself active by walking every day. He also loves attending community events by various Indian Muslim Organisations. These events help him stay close to his many friends and relatives.

Most importantly, he spends his time doting on his wife and his three married daughters. We wish Mr Jaafar many more years of happy and healthy retired life!

The Story of Mr Syeed Ibrahim, son of Mohamed Osman Maricar
During this week’s SNN visit, we had the pleasure of meeting Mr Syeed, a gentleman whose flamboyant spirit and genteel demeanour instantly command the room. At 76, his youthful energy and sharp wit belie his years, reflecting a life well lived in Singapore.

Mr Syeed arrived in Singapore as a ten-year-old immigrant. After completing his education up to the Higher School Certificate, he became part of Singapore’s second National Service intake.
His career reflected resilience and keen instinct. After working as an accounts clerk and briefly entering the restaurant trade, a low point led to a turning point. Observing a gap in poultry supply beyond traditional wet markets, he founded Syed Abdullah Fresh and Frozen Chicken Supply in Bedok, which he ran successfully for 25 years.

Later, he discovered this path may have been fated. Though unplanned, his grandfather had once run a large-scale poultry business. A century-old porcelain ornament shaped like a hen, now in his home, stands as a symbol linking his success to his family’s past.

One accolade stood out during our visit: a trophy for the “Most Courteous Shopkeeper in Kaki Bukit Constituency”. It came as no surprise, as his mother had always regarded him as the most well-behaved of her five children.

His leadership qualities emerged early. As Head Prefect of Queensway Secondary School, he had the honour of welcoming Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, a memory he still treasures.

A particularly charming part of his life is his marriage. At nine, his grandmother pointed to a newborn girl and declared she would be his wife. Two decades later, this came true. They built a life together and had three children. Though he was widowed 15 years ago, the memory remains deeply cherished.

Forever Active
Retirement has not slowed him down. He continued driving a taxi until the age of 75 to keep mentally active, and now spends his time with his five grandchildren. His collection of vintage photographs hints at a youthful resemblance to a Bollywood matinee idol.
