'…rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.' 📖 Philippians 2:7

Some years ago, there was a trend for Christians to put a short message on their business cards. I recall reading one which said, ‘If you meet me and forget me you have lost nothing; but if you meet Jesus and forget him you have lost everything.’

The gist of the message is strong. Meeting me and forgetting me doesn’t matter, but meeting and then forgetting Jesus would be the ultimate loss.

Paul wants disciples to identify for themselves that the gospel is not about who we are – it is only and ever about who Jesus is. Whether we see ourselves as significant leaders or humble servants is ultimately irrelevant to the gospel. The gospel is about Jesus, not about us. It’s about him living, dying and opening a way for us to go to Heaven. We contribute nothing to that, it has all been done for us, and so there should be no element of self-aggrandisement in any part of our words, thoughts or deeds.

Jesus told a significant short story, or parable, in Luke 17:7-10, and at the conclusion, in his teaching, he simply says, ‘So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty”’ (v 10).

This is the message Paul is seeking to emphasise to the Philippians, and it is a strong message to us too. When we have done everything required of us as disciples of Jesus, we should simply say ‘I am an unworthy servant. I have only done what is expected of me.’ If my role is to be the Lord’s servant, then I have done no more than this. There is nothing I deserve which allows me to claim anything more than that. I am just a servant, nothing else.

➡ 'Be nothing' is today's daily reflection of Words of Life. The gospel is not about making much of ourselves, but about making much of Jesus. His example calls us to let go of pride and embrace the humility of a servant.

The Salvation Army is a church, and our ministers, known as officers, dedicate their lives to serving God and others.

Before being ordained and commissioned, Salvation Army officers train as cadets. This is a time of study, mentoring and hands-on experience, equipping them for a lifetime of faith and service that can include leading local churches and community projects for some of the most vulnerable people in society.

This week, we're welcoming a new cohort of cadets – known as a session – as they begin this important journey. Join us in praying for Salvation Army cadets across the United Kingdom and Ireland Territory. 🙏
