Applications are still open for the position of Choral Scholar (Tenor) with Sherborne Abbey Choir and Sherborne Boys for the 2026–27 academic year.

This unique opportunity offers a year immersed in the musical life of one of England's most beautiful Abbeys, working alongside experienced musicians, singing regular services and contributing to a thriving musical community.

Alongside excellent remuneration, the position includes accommodation in Sherborne and meals during term time.

Whether you're taking a gap year, completing your studies, considering a career in music education or looking towards a future lay clerkship, this could be an invaluable next step.

You may have heard a bell during the Eucharist… why?

At certain moments during Holy Communion, a small bell may be rung.

Traditionally, it marks important points within the service, particularly during the prayer over the bread and wine.

Historically, the bell helped people know that something significant was happening, especially in large churches where not everyone could see clearly.

Today, it remains as a quiet act of attention.

A sound that says:

Pause. Listen. This moment matters.

Not every church uses bells, and practices differ, but you may hear them at Sherborne Abbey during some services.

✍️ A message from 1775...

As part of the recent conservation work on the Horsey Monument, one of the team from JPConservation made a remarkable discovery while carefully dismantling and reassembling the stonework.

Hidden away for centuries was a simple inscription: "TV 1775".

Who was TV? A stonemason? An apprentice? Someone proud of their work, leaving their mark for future generations to discover? We may never know. But nearly 250 years later, their signature has re-emerged, connecting us with the skilled hands that cared for this monument long before our own time.

Today, we have the privilege of preserving the Abbey for those who will come after us, just as others did before.

For many people, Sherborne Abbey is still affectionately known as the Cathedral of Dorset. That phrase speaks to its earliest role, when Sherborne was the seat of a bishop and one of the great religious centres of Wessex.

From AD 705 until the episcopal seat was moved to Old Sarum in 1075, Sherborne held cathedral status. Imagine the Abbey’s early life as a centre of worship, administration, learning and influence, drawing clergy, pilgrims, landowners and local people into its orbit. The town we know today grew around a place that was never simply beautiful, but deeply important.

🎶 Choral Scholar (Tenor) Opportunity 2026–27 🎶

Sherborne Abbey Choir and Sherborne Boys are seeking to appoint a Choral Scholar (Tenor) for the academic year beginning in September 2026.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a talented graduate or gap year singer to spend a year immersed in the rich musical life of Sherborne Abbey and Sherborne Boys, singing regular choral services and working alongside experienced musicians in one of the country's most inspiring musical settings.

The successful candidate will join the Abbey Choir's busy programme of services and concerts, while also supporting the wider musical life of Sherborne Boys, a school renowned for its outstanding musical tradition.

The role would suit a good sight-reader with choral experience who may be considering a future in music education, a lay clerkship or further musical study.

The position includes:
🎵 Excellent remuneration
