Sherborne Abbey

Sherborne Abbey Founded by St.

Aldhelm in AD 705, Sherborne Abbey has developed from Saxon cathedral to the worshipping heart of a monastic community, and finally, to one of the most beautiful of England’s parish churches.

📹 Ever wondered how a historic monument is carefully reassembled?

During recent conservation work on the Clement Monument, we had the opportunity to place a few items into a time capsule before the monument was sealed once more.

The majority of this video shows the conservation team from JPConservation carrying out the final stage of the project: carefully lowering and securing the monument's lid back into place.

It's a process that most visitors never get to see, and one that highlights the skill, patience and expertise required to care for the historic treasures found throughout Sherborne Abbey.

Sometimes conservation isn't glamorous, but it is fascinating. We thought you might enjoy this rare glimpse behind the scenes.

Our thanks to the team at JP Conservation for their meticulous work in helping preserve this important piece of the Abbey's heritage for future generations.

Happy Dorset Day 💛❤️

Today is a celebration of everything that makes Dorset special — its landscapes, communities, history and heritage. From the Jurassic Coast to its historic towns and villages, Dorset is a county rich in stories, tradition and character.

For more than 1,300 years, Sherborne Abbey has stood at the heart of Dorset life, witnessing generations of worship, celebration, remembrance and community. We are proud to be part of the county's remarkable heritage and grateful to all those who help preserve it for future generations.

Whether you're a lifelong Dorset resident or discovering the county for the first time, today is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate this extraordinary place we call home.

Happy Dorset Day from all of us at Sherborne Abbey.

Some areas within the Abbey are currently difficult to access for those with reduced mobility.
As part of the Facilities Upgrade Programme, improved access and the introduction of a wheelchair lift will help ensure that more people are able to experience and enjoy these important spaces.
The aim is simple: that more people are able to participate fully in the life of the Abbey, regardless of mobility.

What is Trinity Sunday?

Celebrated the week after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday reflects on one of the central beliefs of Christianity: God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Unlike many feast days, it does not remember a single event. Instead it reflects on relationship, mystery and the nature of God.

It is one of the quieter moments in the Church year, but one with deep meaning.

Each year, more than 50,000 people visit Sherborne Abbey.

Many come to worship. Others come to attend concerts, civic events, school visits or simply to spend time in a place that means something to them.

Yet the Abbey currently provides no facilities within the building itself.

Part of the Facilities Upgrade Programme will carefully introduce discreet and accessible facilities within the Abbey, helping visitors and worshippers remain comfortably and participate more fully in its life.

Sherborne Abbey is not simply a historic building.

It is an active church, a place of worship, a concert venue, a civic space and somewhere that continues to sit at the centre of community life.

Every week, the Abbey welcomes worshippers, school groups, visitors, volunteers, choirs and concert audiences.

The Facilities Upgrade Programme is about ensuring that this remarkable building can continue to serve all of those people well, not only today, but for future generations.
