What happened to Edith Stein’s manuscripts during the Second World War – and how were they saved?

The story of Edith Stein’s written legacy is itself an extraordinary story of danger, rescue, and preservation.

In our third talk for Tag des offenen Denkmals®, we will trace the eventful history of her manuscripts during the Second World War. Where were her notes and manuscripts kept? What happened to them amid the turmoil of war and during the evacuation of the Carmelite monastery in Echt? And how was it ultimately possible to save Edith Stein’s manuscripts and preserve them for future generations?

From there, the story continues into the post-war period and to Cologne: we will explore how the manuscripts eventually came to Cologne and how the Edith Stein Archive was established.

An extraordinary story of wartime danger, rescue, and preservation – and at the same time the story behind the origins of today’s Edith Stein Archive in Cologne.

Was geschah mit Edith Steins Manuskripten während des Zweiten Weltkriegs – und wie konnten sie gerettet werden?

Die Geschichte des schriftlichen Nachlasses Edith Steins ist selbst eine außergewöhnliche Geschichte von Gefährdung, Rettung und Bewahrung.

In unserem dritten Vortrag zum Tag des offenen Denkmals® verfolgen wir die bewegte Geschichte ihrer Manuskripte während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Wo befanden sich ihre Aufzeichnungen und Manuskripte? Was geschah mit ihnen in den Wirren des Krieges und bei der Evakuierung des Karmels in Echt? Und wie gelang es schließlich, Edith Steins Manuskripte zu retten und für die Nachwelt zu bewahren?

Von dort führt der Weg weiter in die Nachkriegszeit und nach Köln: Wir erzählen, wie die Manuskripte schließlich nach Köln gelangten und wie das Edith-Stein-Archiv entstand.

Eine außergewöhnliche Geschichte von Krieg, Gefährdung, Rettung und Bewahrung – und zugleich die Vorgeschichte des heutigen Edith-Stein-Archivs in Köln.

Our English-language online webinar for researchers on 30 September at 6:30 p.m. will address these and other practical questions. We will introduce the Archive and its research opportunities and explain step by step how to prepare for a research stay with us.

We are especially pleased that Dr Rodrigo de la Vega will be joining us for this webinar. He knows the Edith Stein Archive from his own experience as a researcher: his collaboration with us began during his doctoral studies and continues to this day. He will share his own experience of conducting research at the Archive and will also be available to answer your questions.

The webinar is intended for PhD and Master’s students as well as other researchers who are already working on Edith Stein or are considering a research stay in Cologne.

Er kennt das Edith-Stein-Archiv aus eigener Erfahrung als Forscher: Seine Zusammenarbeit mit uns begann bereits während seiner Promotionszeit und besteht bis heute. Er wird deshalb nicht nur seine eigenen Erfahrungen mit der Forschung im Archiv teilen, sondern auch für Fragen zur Verfügung stehen.

A summer full of encounters at the Edith Stein Archive 🌍📚

Over the past few weeks, we have had the pleasure of welcoming guests from many parts of the world to the Edith Stein Archive: from the United States, Brazil, Slovakia,Great Britain, Belgium, Spain, Poland, Switzerland and, of course, Germany. During Edith Stein Week, we also welcomed many spontaneous visitors.

These encounters bring us not only into contact with people, but also with many remarkable stories.

We met, for example, a priest who makes a pilgrimage in the footsteps of Edith Stein every year. This year, his journey brought him to us in Cologne on foot from Bad Bergzabern.

Another lovely encounter was with sisters from Slovakia. Not everyone spoke German or English, so we simply tried another way: the sisters spoke Slovak, while our archive director spoke Polish. And indeed, we were able to understand each other surprisingly well. 😊

Our guests this summer also included students, doctoral candidates and researchers who came to work in the archive or to seek advice on their academic work, research projects and their further development.

It is precisely this diversity that makes our work at the Edith Stein Archive so special: people come to Edith Stein from many different countries and for many different reasons – for research, on pilgrimage, or sometimes quite spontaneously.

And the summer is not over yet. ☀️

Open Monument Day at the Edith Stein Archive in Cologne

On 12 September 2026, we will open our doors for Open Monument Day! On this special day, we would like to introduce Edith Stein, her life and thought, as well as the history of our archive, from different perspectives.

Today, we would like to present the first two talks in our programme:

11:00 am | Edith Stein: Life, Work, and the Relevance of Her Thought Today

Who was Edith Stein, and what makes her thought relevant to us today?

Accompanied by selected historical photographs, the talk will guide you through the most important stages of her life: from her family background and university studies to her academic work and conversion, her entry into the Carmelite monastery in Cologne, and her death in Auschwitz. It will also offer an introduction to central themes of her philosophical thought and consider what Edith Stein can still say to us today.

How did Edith Stein’s journey from philosophy eventually lead her to the Carmelite monastery in Cologne?

Using selected photographs, the talk will trace important stages of her personal and spiritual journey: from her university years and formative encounters through her turn to Christianity and baptism to her entry into the Carmelite monastery in Cologne in 1933. Particular attention will be given to the experiences, encounters, and decisions that shaped this path.

Am 12. September 2026 öffnen wir unsere Türen zum Tag des offenen Denkmals®! An diesem Tag möchten wir Edith Stein, ihren Weg und ihr Denken ebenso wie die Geschichte unseres Archivs aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven näherbringen.

Heute stellen wir Ihnen die ersten beiden Vorträge unseres Programms vor:

Wer war Edith Stein und was macht ihr Denken bis heute aktuell?

Begleitet von ausgewählten historischen Fotografien führt der Vortrag durch die wichtigsten Stationen ihres Lebens: von ihrer Herkunft und Studienzeit über ihre wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit und ihre Konversion bis zum Eintritt in den Kölner Karmel und ihrem Tod in Auschwitz. Zugleich gibt er einen Einblick in zentrale Themen ihres philosophischen Denkens und fragt danach, was Edith Stein uns heute noch zu sagen hat.

Wie führte Edith Steins Weg von der Philosophie schließlich in den Kölner Karmel?

A special visit to the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia ✨

On 10 August, Dr. Monika Adamczyk-Enriquez, Director of the Edith Stein Archive, had the special opportunity to visit the Edith Stein Room at the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia in person.

Ute Ackermann-Mundt and Jasmin Krickhaus, who developed the new educational concept for the Edith Stein Room, welcomed her and personally presented the completed project.

A particularly special moment was the opportunity to try out the mutoscope herself and to watch the short biographical film about Edith Stein in the place where it has now found its permanent home. The Edith Stein Archive was pleased to support the project by providing historical photographs from its collections and by contributing to the content and revision of the accompanying texts. It was therefore all the more rewarding to experience the result of this collaboration first-hand.

We are particularly pleased that Edith Stein is among the personalities to whom a dedicated room has been given at the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia. This tribute highlights Edith Stein’s enduring significance for North Rhine-Westphalia and far beyond. It is especially meaningful to us that her life and thought are present in such a place and are presented to visitors in a contemporary way.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Ute Ackermann-Mundt and Jasmin Krickhaus for the invitation, the personal presentation of the project, the interesting exchange, and the warm welcome at the State Chancellery!

On 27 and 28 August, the Archive will be open as usual.

From 2 September, we will once again be open during our regular opening hours.

International academic visitors at the Edith Stein Archive 🌍📚

Over the past few weeks, we have been delighted to welcome two guests from the United States to the Edith Stein Archive:

Rev. Dr. Thomas Gricoski OSB, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology and President of the International Association for the Study of the Philosophy of Edith Stein (IASPES), as well as Michele Kueter Petersen, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Theology at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.

Both are deeply engaged in scholarly research on Edith Stein. During their stays in Cologne, they worked with our collections and also took the opportunity for academic and personal exchange on Edith Stein’s thought, current research questions, and future projects.

It is always a particular pleasure for us when international Edith Stein research comes together in such a tangible way at the Archive: through work with the sources, conversation, and the joint development of new ideas.

Thank you very much for your visits, the inspiring conversations, and the time spent together at the Archive. We are already looking forward to seeing you again!

In den vergangenen Wochen haben wir uns sehr gefreut, zwei Gäste aus den USA im Edith-Stein-Archiv begrüßen zu dürfen:

Rev. Event Notice | International Edith Stein Symposium in Chile

We are pleased to draw your attention to the XVII International Symposium “Art, Meaning and Transcendence: Dialogues with Edith Stein”, which will take place on 26 and 27 August 2026 at the Faculty of Theology of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Over the course of two days, a series of lectures and presentations will explore Edith Stein’s thought from the perspective of art, meaning, and transcendence.

International guests include Anna María Pezzella (Pontificia Università Lateranense, Rome), María Clara Bingemer (Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro), and Alejandro Meñas (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia).
