St. Joseph Seminary is a Roman Catholic seminary in Edmonton serving the dioceses of Western Canada.

Joseph Seminary is a Roman Catholic seminary located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Connected to Newman Theological College, the seminary is dedicated to the formation of those who are called to the Roman Catholic priesthood. Called by the Archbishop of Edmonton, who has associated with himself the other Bishops of Western Canada as its Board of Regents, St. Joseph Seminary pursues its specific mission of training current and future diocesan priests.

The prayer calendar for the 2026/2027 seminary year is out!

This year, there are 48 seminarians representing nine dioceses across Western Canada. As we celebrate our 100th anniversary and the 600+ priests who have graduated from St. Joseph's, please keep our community in your prayers this year as we continue to discern the Lord's call.

Thank you to everyone who came to our 100th Anniversary Open House last week! It was a real blessing to welcome you to our home and share our history and parts of our community life with you!

It's been just over a month since our propaedeutic seminarians began their formation!

This year, 15 men from seven dioceses across Western Canada entered our community. The propaedeutic year is a spirituality year, focusing on community life, prayer, and service. Yesterday, on the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, they made a pilgrimage to the Marian grotto built by Venerable Antoine Kowalczyk at Campus Saint-Jean.

Please keep all the propaedeutics in your prayers this year, as well as their directors, Fr. John and Fr. Geoffrey.

The public Masses at St. Joseph Seminary will resume in October! Join us at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, at the seminary (9828 84 Street).

Public Masses are held on the first Wednesday of each month:

November 4, 2026
December 2, 2026
January 6, 2027 (Divine Liturgy with Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Seminary)
February 3, 2027
March 3, 2027
April 7, 2027 (final Public Mass until October 2027)

On September 15, the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, six of our brothers from the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton took the next step in their priestly formation. Once a seminarian enters his theological studies, the Church calls him to make a public expression of his intention to receive Holy Orders, and then, in the following years, will institute him in the Ministries of Lector and Acolyte.

Kiefer S. and Sean U. were accepted as candidates for Holy Orders, professing their commitment to complete their formation.

Marc B., Noah K., and Joseph S. were instituted in the Ministry of Lector, charged with proclaiming and teaching the Word of God.

Daniel P. was instituted in the Ministry of Acolyte to take up the role of assisting the ministers at the altar.

Please continue to pray for our brothers who have taken this next step, and for our entire community!

Glory be to Jesus Christ! The 2026-2027 seminary year began last week with our opening retreat, led by Hieromonk Fr. Teodosy Kraychuk. Reflecting on the mediatorship of the Son in the life of the Trinity and in the world, Fr. Teodosy encouraged us that our future ministerial priesthood will be rooted and sanctified in the Royal high priesthood of Jesus Christ.

Once again, our friends from Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Seminary joined us for the retreat and led us in Byzantine liturgies throughout the week.

This year, St. Joseph's has 48 seminarians representing 9 dioceses across Western Canada - which includes 15 new members of our community! Please keep us in your prayers throughout this year!

On August 22, the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary, three of our brothers from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary took the next step in their priestly formation. Once a seminarian enters his theological studies, the Church calls him to make a public expression of his intention to receive Holy Orders, and then, in the following years, will institute him in the Ministries of Lector and Acolyte.

Benjamin T. was accepted as a candidate for Holy Orders, professing his commitment to complete his formation.

André B. and Bennet C. were instituted in the Ministry of Acolyte to take up the role of assisting the ministers at the altar.

On Friday, Oct. 2, more than 1,000 Catholics from across central Alberta will meet at the Archbishop's Dinner for the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton. This annual gathering is an opportunity to celebrate our shared faith, and this year we will hear Archbishop Stephen Hero share his vision for the Archdiocese for the first time since his installation in January.

We give thanks for the seminarians discerning God's call to serve His Church.

Forty seminarians from nine dioceses are studying at St. Joseph Seminary, including 16 seminarians for the Archdiocese of Edmonton. We are especially grateful to welcome eight new seminarians as they begin this journey of formation.

We also celebrate the 28 young men who participated in theCome and See Weekend, taking time to prayerfully explore a vocation to the priesthood or religious life.

These signs of hope reflect our pastoral priority of Formation for Confident Witness —encouraging one another to courageously respond to Christ's call and joyfully serve His people.

Our community congratulates Deacons Andrew and Daniel of the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton who were ordained to the transitional diaconate last week at St. Joseph's Basilica in Edmonton!

Deacon Andrew has been part of our community since 2017, and Deacon Daniel since 2020, and we pray that God may bless their ministry and that they may serve the people of God with joy, zeal, and holiness.
