A Lamb Who Shepherds?
by Rev. Jonathan Kraemer, President
“For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Revelation 7:17
In this reading from Revelation we encounter a curious picture. There in the midst of people from every tribe and nation and peoples and languages who are clothed in white robes is a lamb, and Revelation 7:17 says it is a lamb who shepherds. Who’s ever heard of such a thing? People are not sheep who are shepherded. And a sheep does not do the shepherding, let alone a lamb, the smallest and weakest and most vulnerable of the flock.
Yet this is one of the most powerful images of Jesus, our Lord, in Revelation. While we see him depicted in all His might in Revelation 1, here we see him depicted as a lamb who shepherds or rules the flock.
While we might think that people are not sheep, Isaiah 53 begs to differ: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way” (53:6). We are like sheep who love to wander, to go our own ways. These are not the scenic route, but dangerous, damaging paths that lead us away from heaven. We need someone who will lead us in right paths, and more than that, we need someone who will rescue us from our foolish wandering.
That is where the lamb who shepherds comes in. Who is the lamb? I’m sure you have guessed by now it is Jesus, whom John the Baptist proclaimed as “The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29). Jesus is the humble shepherd who is one of us, but pure and without sin. And yet he was offered as the sacrifice for the world, for your sins and mine. He does not lead us in ways that are difficult and dangerous, but to springs of living water, to heaven itself, to the comfort of God our Heavenly Father who “will wipe away every tear from our eyes.” So let us look in trust to Jesus our shepherding lamb, and follow him, now and for eternity!
