On Friday, May 22, we gathered in thanksgiving and celebration for the many gifts God has graciously bestowed upon the Seminary and His Church. It was an evening marked by joy, vocation, and faithful service as we celebrated the placement of two vicars, the commendation of two colloquy pastors, the graduation of a GCTS student, the conferring of an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree, and the presentation of two Friend of the Seminary awards.

We rejoice in God’s abundant blessings!

Seminarian Terry Pattison was placed as Vicar at Christ Lutheran Church of Mellowdale in Barrhead, Alberta.

Seminarian Nicolas Goerz was placed as Vicar at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Parksville, British Columbia.

Rev. Eba Lemi Mosissa and Rev. Jean-Luc Damas were commended as Colloquy Pastors as they continue faithfully serving in ministry.

Rick Laursen received his Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies.

Rev. Dr. Mark Lobitz was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree (honoris causa) in recognition of his faithful service to Christ and His Church.

Gord & Edith Schoepp were awarded the Friend of the Seminary Award.

Patrick Moore was awarded, posthumously, the Friend of the Seminary Award.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to all who helped plan, organize, and serve throughout this special evening, especially our gracious hosts at Riverbend Lutheran Church in Edmonton.

As another academic year draws to a close, we give thanks and praise to God for continuing to raise up servants for Jesus’ sake, men called to carry the Gospel into congregations and communities across Canada and beyond in the years ahead.

Photos from the service and celebration will be shared next week!

Dr. Mike Kuhn welcomed a group of potential students to the seminary this past Saturday for an Open House to give them a glimpse into life on campus, into ministry as a career, and how we can support them to get here.
This event is an important day for those thinking of becoming pastors and deacons. An opportunity to meet faculty and students, to ask questions, and even maybe get that little extra nudge to a life of service to God.
Please pray for all who attended, that they would prayerfully consider where God is calling them to serve.

From April 28–30, our Seminary campus was filled with the welcome rhythm of conversation, learning, and shared purpose as church workers, presenters, and guests gathered for the Sabbath Conference.

Over those days, deacons, non-pastoral church workers, and volunteers from across Canada came together, many arriving from very different contexts, yet united in a common calling. In lecture rooms and over lunch tables, conversations unfolded: stories of ministry shared, challenges understood, encouragement freely given.

The Sabbath Conference continues to serve a unique and important place within the life of the Church, offering space specifically shaped for those whose vocations often go unseen, yet are deeply felt in congregational life. Here, they are not only equipped, but also reminded that they do not labour alone.

It was a joy to welcome them into the life of the Seminary, even for a short time. We pray that as they returned to their communities, they carried with them renewed strength, encouragement, and confidence in the work entrusted to them.

A Lamb Who Shepherds?
by Rev. Jonathan Kraemer, President

“For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Revelation 7:17

In this reading from Revelation we encounter a curious picture. There in the midst of people from every tribe and nation and peoples and languages who are clothed in white robes is a lamb, and Revelation 7:17 says it is a lamb who shepherds. Who’s ever heard of such a thing? People are not sheep who are shepherded. And a sheep does not do the shepherding, let alone a lamb, the smallest and weakest and most vulnerable of the flock.

Yet this is one of the most powerful images of Jesus, our Lord, in Revelation. While we see him depicted in all His might in Revelation 1, here we see him depicted as a lamb who shepherds or rules the flock.

While we might think that people are not sheep, Isaiah 53 begs to differ: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way” (53:6). We are like sheep who love to wander, to go our own ways. These are not the scenic route, but dangerous, damaging paths that lead us away from heaven. We need someone who will lead us in right paths, and more than that, we need someone who will rescue us from our foolish wandering.

That is where the lamb who shepherds comes in. Who is the lamb? I’m sure you have guessed by now it is Jesus, whom John the Baptist proclaimed as “The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29). Jesus is the humble shepherd who is one of us, but pure and without sin. And yet he was offered as the sacrifice for the world, for your sins and mine. He does not lead us in ways that are difficult and dangerous, but to springs of living water, to heaven itself, to the comfort of God our Heavenly Father who “will wipe away every tear from our eyes.” So let us look in trust to Jesus our shepherding lamb, and follow him, now and for eternity!
