Last year I helped to carry the Memorial Cloth — a sacred 60-meter-long red banner that bears the verified names of thousands of Indigenous children who died in Canada's residential school system.

I deeply believe that Every Child Matters, and yet I struggle to find daily connections to that belief – how do I live this out every day? It’s one thing to wear an orange shirt on National Day of Truth and Reconciliation but another to choose to get uncomfortable with the truths that led to this commemoration.

So, I thought I’d make a short list of things you might consider engaging with as acts of reconciliation beyond Sept. 30.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we come together to honour residential school Survivors and remember those who were harmed. In Coquitlam, we recognize and honour Indigenous communities today by reflecting on our shared history and committing to a future built on understanding and respect.

And just like that…we have a new General Secretary!

Félicitations Rev. Éric!

We're pleased to share that The United Church of Canada has appointed Rev. Éric Hébert-Daly as the next General Secretary, effective January 1, 2027.

Currently serving as Executive Minister for East Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario Outaouais, and Nakonha:ka Regional Councils, Rev. Hébert-Daly brings extensive experience in church leadership, strategic planning, and community development. A passionate advocate for a thriving and welcoming church, he has played a key role in shaping Toward 2035, our hope-filled strategy for a bolder future.

Born to an Acadian family, Éric has roots in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. He will be the first Francophone to serve as General Secretary.

We give thanks for the faithful leadership of Rev. Michael Blair, who will continue as General Secretary until December 31. Following a transition period in January 2027, he will retire, after more than six years of dedicated service in this critical leadership role.

Please join us in congratulating Rev. Éric Hébert-Daly as he prepares to begin this new ministry of leadership and service.

A Morning of Conversation, Reflection and Possibility
Saturday, October 24th | 9:00am–1:00pm w/ Lunch, childcare provided

Eagle Ridge is in a time of transition.
We have welcomed a new minister. Some things in our life together are changing, while other things continue to matter deeply.
We are also living with larger questions about children and youth, belonging and community, worship and spiritual life, and what it means to be a United Church congregation in a changing world.

This is not a meeting where a plan for the future has already been developed, and we won't be asking the congregation to make major decisions that morning. Nor are we expecting to leave at noon knowing what Eagle Ridge will look like in five years.

Instead, we want to begin with where we actually are.

We'll remember some of what has nourished us and made Eagle Ridge important to us. We'll make room for things we may be grieving, releasing or carrying with us through this transition. And we'll become curious about what we are discovering and what might be calling us forward.
