"An Autumn with Paul — Week 4: When the Church Gets It Wrong"

📖 Galatians 2:11–21

"What happens when the Church gets it wrong?"

We don't always find it easy to admit our mistakes. Sometimes it's even harder to hear someone tell us we've been wrong, particularly when we believe our intentions were good.

But what happens when our reluctance to acknowledge those mistakes begins to affect others?

This Sunday at Coldbrook Baptist Church, Pastor Eric continued our series, "An Autumn with Paul", with a message entitled "When the Church Gets It Wrong."

In Galatians 2, we encounter a difficult moment in the early Church. Peter, one of Jesus' closest disciples, begins distancing himself from Gentile believers out of fear of what others might think. Paul recognizes that something far greater than a disagreement is at stake and courageously confronts him.

It's a powerful reminder that even faithful followers of Christ can sometimes allow fear, pride, or tradition to interfere with the grace we're called to demonstrate.

Together, we explored some challenging questions:

• Do we have the courage to speak the truth when something is wrong?

• Can we receive correction with humility rather than defensiveness?

• Are we sometimes more concerned with keeping the peace than preserving genuine Christian unity?

• Have we unintentionally made others feel unwelcome in a family where Christ has already made room for them?

At the heart of Paul's message is this extraordinary declaration:

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." — Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

Our hope doesn't rest in getting everything right. It rests in Jesus Christ, whose grace gives us the freedom to acknowledge our mistakes, seek forgiveness, restore relationships, and begin again.

The Church isn't perfect. Neither are we. But we belong to a Saviour who continues to shape us into the people He's called us to be.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE PEOPLE WHO PREACH GRACE STRUGGLE TO PRACTICE IT?

This Sunday, we continue our journey through the life and ministry of the Apostle Paul with a powerful encounter between Paul and Peter.

When Peter's actions began contradicting the very gospel he proclaimed, Paul had the courage to confront him. But this wasn't simply about pointing out someone's mistakes. It was about protecting the truth of the gospel and remembering that, in Christ, we all belong at the same table.

Sometimes faithfulness requires the COURAGE TO SPEAK. Other times, it requires the HUMILITY TO LISTEN.

And sometimes, the hardest words we can say are, "You're right. I was wrong. I'm sorry."

❤️ HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS: Our hope doesn't rest in getting everything right. It rests in Jesus Christ, whose grace welcomes us, corrects us, and gives us the courage to begin again.

Join Pastor Eric as we explore what it means to be a church where truth and grace walk hand in hand.

Because the church will sometimes get it wrong. BUT JESUS ISN'T FINISHED WITH US YET.

Weather permitting, I’ll be back out on the Harvest Moon Trail behind Coldbrook Baptist Church this coming Wednesday.
No appointment. No agenda. No expectations.
I’ll have free cold water to hand out, a comfy chair to share, and an open ear for anyone who would like to stop for a while.
We can talk about anything — faith, family, work, worries, questions, joys, frustrations… or just how your day is going. And if you’d like someone to pray with you, I’d be honoured to do that too.
Or, if you’re just passing through and need a bottle of water, that’s perfectly fine too.
Sometimes ministry doesn’t need four walls. Sometimes it looks like a couple of chairs beside a trail, a cold drink, and someone willing to listen.
Weather permitting, I’ll see you on the trail! 🌲🚶‍♂️💧
