You can know a great deal about God and still be standing outside.
That is the uncomfortable thing underneath Luke 10.
Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit and thanks his Father for hiding these things from the wise and the learned and revealing them to little children. Not because knowledge is bad ... because knowing about someone and knowing someone are two different things, and only one of them can be earned.
Then he says the line. No one knows the Father except the Son, and the ones the Son chooses to show him to. There is no side door into God. No back way in through cleverness, or effort, or religion done well. One door, and the Son is it.
Which would be devastating news if he were reluctant ... he is not. He opened that door himself, through his own body, and walked out of a grave to prove it was open. And he loves to open it for people who come with nothing in their hands.
So Sunday starts with a confession none of us worked out on our own. We sing that the blood gives us boldness to walk straight in. We build a life the same way we first received him, hands still open. We name the chasm and the one who crossed it. And we end where Paul ends, with everything coming from him and through him and back to him. Then we come to the table and remember that the way was opened long before any of us got here.
Come like a child. Take what only the Son can give.
