-Day 6-
The Disciples

Scripture:
Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, Acts 1

-Bible reflection-

In Matthew 28 we find Jesus leading the disciples to the top of the Mount of Olives, just outside of Jerusalem. There He proclaimed a mandate that would change history forever. A mandate, that to this day, is shared by all those who submit to His Lordship - The Great Commission.

After this proclamation Jesus instructed His disciples to go and wait in Jerusalem until they are clothed in the power that would empower them to live out this call. This promised power is none other than the Holy Spirit of God that would flood the lives of every believer from that day forward.

The Disciples departed with great joy and devoted themselves to God in prayer in the upper room until the day of Pentecost.

-Lesson-
When we look at these 10 days between the ascension of Jesus, where the promise was made regarding the coming Holy Spirit, and the day of Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit was poured out on all believers, we are presented with a key truth that is found in every breakthrough story throughout scripture and modern day Christianity - the importance of devotion to God in prayer.

Prayer is not simply sitting back and presenting God with all my needs and desires, but rather, Prayer is the place where we connect to the very heart of God and align ourselves with Him.

Prayer is the place where all my needs, desires and perspectives are shaped by the Holy Spirit, and where I am formed into the image of Jesus. Prayer is the meeting place with God where the external outcomes begin to matter less, and the inward transformation into Who I am beholding takes precedence.

We never graduate from our dire need to press into God’s heart through prayer.

-Prayer-
Father God, words begin to fall short when I stand before You. Thank You that in Your presence I can lay down every weight and trouble and just focus on You, knowing fully that You have my back and will take care of all things while You shape me into the image of Your Son Jesus. Father, would You give me a hunger for prayer and help me to build my life around it. I love you Lord, Amen.

-Day 5-

David

Scripture:
1 Samuel 16-31, 2 Samuel 1-24

-Bible reflection-
After God rejected Saul as the king of Israel because of his disobedience, He sent Samuel to the house of Jesse the Bethlehemite to anoint a new king.

Jesse spoke of his youngest son David, who had been out in the field keeping the sheep. When David was presented before Samuel, God spoke to Samuel and confirmed that David was to be anointed in the presence of his brothers as the king.

Instead of walking right up to the throne and unseating Saul, what followed was a turbulent 15-20 year waiting period that was filled with war, betrayal, and hiding in fear as Saul hunted his once beloved servant David.

Upon Saul’s death, when David was about 30 years of age, he finally ascended the throne, and his private anointing and call as king was fulfilled.

-Lesson-
Now there are many lessons we can learn from David’s life. He was by no means perfect, and made many mistakes. However, God himself calls David a man after His own heart - Why?

If we look at David’s life, time and time again, in the good, the bad, and the terrible, David never turned his heart away from God. No matter the sin he committed, tragedy he suffered, or persecution he endured, we always find David pouring out his heart before the Lord in repentance, thanksgiving and adoration.

David understood something that changed everything for him. He knew that no matter what was going on, God was God, and he was not, and that in every situation, good or bad, he needed to sit at God’s feet with an open heart, even when he did not understand. He understood that beholding God was the key to breakthrough and transformation.

-Prayer-
Father God, thank You that in all things I can be brutally honest with You. Thank You that at no point does my process or worries discourage You. However Lord, in the middle of that I ask that You would help me to keep my eyes on You and to not act out of haste, trying to fulfil Your word for You. Thank You that You are a faithful God, and that in the waiting I can become more like You as I behold You. I love You Lord, Amen.

-Day 4-

Job

-Scripture-
Job 1-42

-Bible reflection-
At the start of the book of Job, we are introduced to a very wealthy man from Uz named Job. He is described as a man who feared God and stood upright and blameless in God’s sight.

Scripture goes on to explain that satan appeared before God, accusing Job of only trusting in Him because of all he had. He goes on to appeal to God to curse Job in order to expose this supposed falsehood in Job’s faith. God, knowing Job’s heart, permits satan to lay his hand on all that Job has, excluding his life, and the result was devastating. In one fell swoop Job lost everything.

Unsatisfied, satan returned to God and appealed to Him further that Job’s health was reason enough for him to stay true, and that if this too was taken, Job would surely turn from God. God, knowing Job’s heart, permitted satan to touch Job’s flesh, but spare his life, and so it was. To satan’s surprise, we find job sitting in ashes, covered in sores, still refusing to curse God. Upon seeing this, even Job’s wife called his devotion foolish and scolded him for his integrity.

Some time later, in Job 38-41, God came and spoke directly to Job, rebuking the words of his wife and friends, and directly speaking into Job’s identity. In that moment, God did not reveal the reason for his suffering but rather He revealed Himself in greatness, wisdom and sovereignty to Job. Upon hearing this, Job responds in chapter 42 with repentance and prayer for those who mislead his heart, and the Lord restored to Job twofold all that he had lost and blessed him with a long life.

-Lesson-
What Job teaches us is that instead of trying to figure out who is to blame for suffering, we are to approach God with an openness and an honesty that invites Him into each situation to reveal Himself and bring the breakthrough that only He can bring.

-Prayer-
Father God, thank You that even in my greatest sufferings, You are never separate from me. Lord, I repent of any wrongful conclusions that I have adopted regarding Your nature, and I ask that You would come and reveal Yourself to me in the middle of what feels impossible. Help me to see You rightly. I love You Lord, Amen.

-Day 3-

Hannah

Scriptures:
1 Samuel 1 & 2

-Bible Reflection-

In 1 Samuel 1 we read of a woman named Hannah. She was the wife of Elkanah, but unfortunately she was unable to bear for him a child. This created within her great turmoil as she longed with her entire being to do just that, however her womb was closed.

One day at the temple in Shiloh Hannah was pouring out all of this pent up heartache, turmoil and disappointment upon God’s feet as she had done for many years. She goes on to call upon God and vows to dedicate to Him the child she so longed for. To her surprise, Eli was sitting in the temple and saw her pouring out her heart before God, but he mistook her for a drunken woman, so great was her distress in her weeping.

Upon speaking with her she confessed this desire to Eli and he declared that her petition would be granted by God, and she conceived Samuel. Dedicating him in service to God.

-Lesson-
Hannah’s story teaches us an important lesson. At no point did she allow what seemed to be years of unanswered prayers, disappointments or longing keep her away from the God who could make the impossible possible.

When Hannah called upon the Lord, she referred to Him as “The Lord of Hosts”, which is God’s military title, literally translating to the God of armies. In this she was calling upon God not only as the God of the universe, creator of all things and keeper of His word, but as the God Who wages war on our behalf and wins every battle where we fall short.

-Prayer-
Father God, thank You that I can approach your throne with boldness as I lay before you the deepest longings of my heart. O Lord of hosts, I ask today that you would fight on my behalf where I am weak. Thank You that you are a keeper of Your word and that no matter what, I can know that with You all impossibilities are overcome. I love You Lord, Amen.

-Day 2-

Joseph

Scripture:
Genesis 37-41

In Genesis 37 we are introduced to a young shepherd boy named Joseph. Now Joseph was not only his father’s favourite, but God also spoke to him through dreams regarding the future. All of this culminated in hatred in the hearts of his brothers and as a result they plotted to kill him. Upon hearing this, his oldest brother Ruben suggested they spare his life, and rather sell him into slavery, and so they did, lying to their father stating that he had died.

Because of God’s hand on Joseph’s life, he quickly grew in favour with Potiphar, only to be later accused of attempted r**e by Potiphar’s wife after he refused to lie with her, and was consequently thrown into captivity again.

It was here in prison that God spoke powerfully through Joseph as he interpreted the dreams of both the baker and cupbearer, only to be forgotten again by the cupbearer when he was released and restored in Pharaoh’s house.

Two full years later, when Pharaoh was plagued by troubling dreams, the cupbearer remembered Joseph, and through God’s power he was able to interpret the dreams. Pharaoh himself recognised that the Spirit of God resided in Joseph, and as a result he appointed him over his house and Joseph was elevated to the position that God promised to him in his dreams when he was still a young shepherd boy.

-Lesson-
The life of Joseph is filled with both beautiful promises from God and terrible betrayal, loss, and false imprisonment.
When Joseph was 17 God declared promises and destiny over him, but only after 23 years and what feels like a lifetime of trials and suffering, were those promises fulfilled - yet through it all he held onto God as God held onto him, and thats what made the difference.

-Prayer-
Father God, thank You that no matter what is happening around me, You are there with me. Father, today I bring each one of these situations before You and I ask that You would show Yourself to me as I wait upon You. Help me to hold onto You as You hold onto me like Joseph did.

-Day 1-

Abraham

Scripture: Genesis 12, 16, 17, 21

When Abram was 75 years old, God spoke a promise over Him. A promise that would not only change the future of Abram’s lineage, but also affect the entire world. It is here in Genesis 12 that we see the first mention of God’s promise to Abram. God declared that He would make Abram into a great nation, and that through his offspring the entire world would be blessed. In obedience, Abram took his wife and kin, and traveled to the land that was promised to him.

After 10 years of waiting on God’s promise, Sarai, still being unable to conceive, convinced Abram to conceive a child with her Egyptian servant Hagar in an attempt to fulfil this very promise. At the age of 86, Abram’s first son Ishmael was born.

13 Years later God appeared to Abram and declared the very promise He made to him 24 years earlier. (It was here that God changed Abram and Sarai’s names to Abraham and Sarah). Upon hearing this, they both laughed at the absurdity of people their age conceiving a child, and yet a year later, when Abraham was 100 years old, God fulfilled His promise and Isaac was born.

-Lesson-

Many times God declares a promise over us and in excitement and anticipation we want to step into it now, not taking into account what God has in store for us in the waiting. When God changed Abraham and Sarah’s names, He was not merely giving them something new to be called, but rather He spoke new Identity over them that would empower them to step into and steward the coming promise.

-Prayer-

Father God, I bring before you all the hopes, dreams, and promises You have spoken over my life. I ask today that You would help me to stay strong in the waiting, even if it takes a lifetime, because I know you are already now doing a mighty work within me. Help me to not miss what You are doing and help me to not prematurely try and force what only You can perfect within me. Thank You for Your timing, I fully submit myself to it. I love you Father, Amen.
