Jeremiah 13 v 1-11

13 Thus says the LORD to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and put it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.” 2So I bought a loincloth according to the word of the LORD, and put it around my waist. 3 And the word of the LORD came to me a second time, 4“Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.” 5So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me. 6 And after many days the LORD said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.” 7Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and I took the loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the loincloth was spoiled; it was good for nothing.8Then the word of the LORD came to me: 9“Thus says the LORD: Even so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.10 This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is good for nothing.11 For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the LORD, that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.

Sermon: You Cannot Hide - Holy Spirit Will Minister Through You! - Ps. Wayne Van Heerden

Reading:

Numbers 11 v 23-30; Acts 2 v 1-4

Summary:

Eldad and Medad were called by God to be Elders for the Israelites as they wandered in the Wilderness to the Promised Land. But they were too afraid to serve God and so they hid amidst the tents in the Wilderness. Holy Spirit found them in the camp, and they began to prophecy. On the day of Pentecost, the 140 disciples of the early Church were all together in the Upper Room praying, locked away because they were afraid of been persecuted by the Jewish authorities. The power of Holy Spirit came upon them; His fire burnt in their bones, and they could not keep quiet. In the boldness and the courage of Holy Spirit, they left the Upper Room, and over two thousand years Holy Spirit has transformed the world through the disciples of Christ. My friends, do not hide away from God’s ministry in your life; be available to be used by Him in supernatural ways. You may hide, but God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit will find you to be His transformation agent in a last world!

Sermon: When God Seems Distant - Ps. Wayne Van Heerden

Reading:

Jeremiah 17 v 7-8; 2 Corinthians 12 v 1-10

Summary:

How do we cope with unresolved suffering as a Christian?

When we face this challenge in our faith, it may feel that God is very distant. Indeed, for some they may feel that they are failing God, or that He is punishing them for an unconfessed sin. My friends, suffering happens even in the lives of good people. You have not failed God or He is not punishing you. In Scripture there are saints who had to deal with continual suffering, and at times felt that God was distant. However, in the midst of their challenge, God the Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, and the power of the Holy Spirit reminded them that He is Sovereign and that He has a will and purpose for their life – here on earth and in eternity. Therefore, in the midst of his suffering, Jeremiah the “weeping prophet” proclaims: “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8) Notwithstanding, my friend, don’t give up – trust in God’s eternal purpose for your life!

Sermon: Do Not Put God In A Box - Mak Malunjwa

Reading:

1 Kings 19 v 1- 19

Theme:

God is infinitely greater for us to put limitations on him, his ways, and his love for us is beyond measure

19 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” 3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.4But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 5And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. 7And the angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” 8And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.

The LORD Speaks to Elijah
9 There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” 11And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.[a] 13And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” 15And the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. 17And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. 18Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

The Call of Elisha
19So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him.

Sermon: Changing Defeat Into Victory! - Ps. Wayne Van Heerden

Reading:

1 Kings 18 v 20-39

Summary:

The Prophet Elijah believed that he was the only prophet left ministering for Yahweh (God). He felt very defeated and was very prone to depression. In the midst of this God called Him to a contest with the prophets of Baal. Baal’s prophets tried through the flamboyance of religion, self-inflicting works and luxury to call down the fire of their gods. But nothing happened. Elijah through simplistic faith, trust in the mercy and grace of God, and walking the path of suffering – experienced the extra-ordinary and supernatural power of God. Indeed, the prophets of Baal exclaimed, “And when all the people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried out, “The LORD – he is God! Yes, the Lord is God!”’
