12 PEOPLE A PASTOR MUST NOT APPOINT

Let’s face it—ministry is sacred, and leadership is not a place for experimentation. Not everyone is profitable for leadership at every season. Some may grow into it later, but placing the wrong person in leadership prematurely can damage lives, weaken the church, and grieve the Spirit of God.

Discernment is not optional—it is a spiritual responsibility. A person’s present condition must always outweigh their past experiences or future potential. God examines the heart as it is now (1 Samuel 16:7), and leadership decisions must reflect that same standard.

Pray thoroughly before appointing anyone. Leadership is stewardship over souls, not a reward for loyalty, familiarity, or gifting. Never gamble with what God has entrusted to you.

Below are 12 types of people every pastor must avoid placing in leadership, with deeper biblical insight added:

1. SPIRITUALLY SICK AND UNSTABLE INDIVIDUALS

A person living in ongoing, unchecked sin is not ready to guide others. Leadership magnifies influence—if the foundation is weak, the impact will be harmful.

Restoration must come before responsibility. God restores privately before He entrusts publicly. A wounded vessel must be healed before it carries others.
(1 Timothy 3:2, Titus 1:6-7, Galatians 6:1, Psalm 51:12)

2. THE UNAVAILABLE AND INCONSISTENT

Faithfulness is the true measure of readiness. A leader who cannot be relied upon in small matters cannot be trusted with greater responsibility.

Consistency in attendance, service, and commitment reveals the state of the heart. God builds with those who show up, not those who only appear when convenient.
(Matthew 25:21-23, 1 Corinthians 4:2, Luke 16:10)

3. DOUBLE-MINDED AND UNCOMMITTED MEMBERS

Someone divided between two spiritual coverings cannot lead with clarity. Divided loyalty weakens authority and confuses direction.

Spiritual leadership requires stability and single devotion. A double-minded person will be unstable in leadership decisions and relationships.
(Matthew 6:24, James 1:8, 1 Corinthians 7:32-35)

4. THOSE WHO DO NOT HONOR GOD WITH THEIR SUBSTANCE

Giving reflects alignment with God’s priorities. When a person resists honoring God with their resources, it often reveals deeper issues of trust and surrender.

Leadership requires a heart that is already yielded to God in both spiritual and practical matters.
(Malachi 3:10, Matthew 6:21, 1 Corinthians 9:13-14)

5. THE PROUD AND SELF-EXALTING

Pride shuts the door to divine help. A proud leader becomes difficult to correct, unwilling to learn, and resistant to accountability.

God does not support pride, and anything built on it will eventually collapse. True leadership flows from humility and a teachable spirit.
(Proverbs 3:34, James 4:6, Philippians 2:3-5)

6. THOSE WHO FAINT IN TRIALS

Leadership involves pressure, opposition, and seasons of testing. Anyone who gives up easily will struggle to sustain others.

Endurance is developed through trials. If a person has not learned to stand in difficulty, they will not be able to guide others through it.
(James 1:2-4, 1 Peter 1:6-7, Proverbs 24:10)

7. REBELLIOUS AND UNSUBMITTED SPIRITS

Rebellion is a pattern that eventually surfaces. A person who resists authority will later challenge leadership and influence others negatively.

Submission is evidence of spiritual growth. Where submission is absent, stability in leadership cannot be sustained.
(Numbers 16:1-3, 1 Samuel 15:23, Hebrews 13:17)

8. THOSE WHO LACK GENUINE LOVE

Leadership without love becomes control and pressure. If a person does not genuinely care for people, their leadership will harm rather than build.

Love is the evidence of true spiritual maturity. Without it, all activity in ministry becomes empty.
(John 13:34-35, 1 John 4:20-21, 1 Corinthians 13:1-3)

9. THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD’S SERVANT

A leader who does not respect or believe in the one they serve under will weaken unity and hinder progress.

Honor sustains order. Where honor is lacking, disorder eventually appears.
(Hebrews 13:17, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13)

10. GREEDY AND SELF-CENTERED INDIVIDUALS

A person driven by gain will misuse leadership for personal benefit. This corrupts motives and damages trust.

Ministry requires sacrifice, generosity, and a willingness to serve without personal agenda.
(1 Timothy 6:10, 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, Acts 20:35)

11. WICKED, HARSH, AND UNMERCIFUL PEOPLE

Harsh individuals create fear instead of growth. Leadership must reflect God’s nature—firm but compassionate.

An unmerciful leader will scatter people, while a compassionate one will nurture and strengthen them.
(Proverbs 10:12, Colossians 3:12-13, 1 Peter 2:1)

12. THOSE NOT CHOSEN OR APPROVED BY GOD

No matter how capable someone appears, if God has not set them apart, their leadership will lack direction and grace.

God’s selection is based on the heart, not outward ability. Appointment without divine approval leads to frustration and disorder.
(1 Samuel 16:7, Acts 13:2-3, Romans 8:30)

GUARD THE ALTAR OF LEADERSHIP

Leadership is not about filling roles—it is about preserving what God is building. Every wrong placement introduces strain, confusion, and unnecessary battles.

Take time to observe patterns, not just moments. Test character over time. Allow processes to reveal what is hidden.

“Lay hands suddenly on no man…” (1 Timothy 5:22)

Protect the flock. Preserve the vision. Let every appointment reflect God’s standard, not human pressure.
