šŸŽ¶ Sublime voices. The beauty of Bach. The richness of South African music.

Yesterday afternoon, St Martin’s was filled with beautiful music as we welcomed the Johannesburg Bach Choir for A Spring Concert. 🌸

From the sacred choral works of J.S. Bach and Mozart to contemporary works by South African composers Mandy Collins and Billy Joubert, the programme was a wonderful celebration of music, heritage and the arrival of spring.

Thank you to the Johannesburg Bach Choir, Music Director Ruth Coggin, soloist JanrƩ van Jaarsveld and accompanist Bienvenu Muyombo for sharing such a special afternoon with us.

A beautiful afternoon of music, belonging and hope. šŸŒæšŸŽ¶

Reverend, Kabelo Motlhakane

Meet Revd. Kabelo Motlhakane: Priest, Mentor, Writer, Runner, and someone who’s spent the better part of 25 years walking alongside young people and institutions, here in South Africa and abroad. Kabelo is an Anglican Priest by calling, but he wears a few other hats too: Public Theologian, Mediator and specialist in change and transformation work. He’s also the founder of Ke Motho Consulting, through which he helps organisations become more just, inclusive, and genuinely humane places to work.

He holds a Master’s in Ethics and Systematic Theology from the University of Pretoria, where his thesis explored the thought of Steve Bantu Biko and the theology of Black Consciousness; the thesis was archived by the Steve Biko Foundation in 2022.

Kabelo co-founded and hosts Mxnzplain, a podcast that creates a brave, honest space for men to talk about the things they don’t always get to talk about: vulnerability, identity, and what it really means to be a man. He also writes for Your Luxury Magazine, reflecting on faith, masculinity, and the shifting shape of identity today.

His care for young people shows up in tangible ways too: he’s served on the advisory board of Spark School in London and as a trustee of the St Peter’s College Education Trust. He currently serves as a trustee of the Clement Manyathela Foundation, which creates access for young people in rural areas through mentorship and psychosocial support. Furthermore, he runs a men’s mentoring programme called Journey, through which he walks with men who are simply trying to figure life out.

At the heart of it all, Kabelo is drawn to disrupting the harmful images of God so many of us inherited, ones tangled up in polarities like race, gender, and sexuality. His theology points instead toward a faith that affirms dignity and freedom for everyone.

Away from the pulpit, Kabelo is a husband and father to a young daughter, a social tennis player, a home chef, a runner, and a fitness enthusiast. Born and raised in Meadowlands, Soweto, he brings all of who he is into every room he enters: faith, family, fitness, and lived experience.

A Sad Loss to the St Martins Family

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Bishop Luke Pato, who served as a priest for many years at St Martin’s.

Bishop Pato was a devoted servant of God who gave 51 years of his life to ministry and service to the Anglican Church and its people. His ministry touched the lives of many and his legacy will continue to be remembered with gratitude.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Pato family, and to all who knew and loved him.

May his soul rest in peace and rise in glory.

ā€œWell done, good and faithful servant.ā€ — Matthew 25:23

Please see the family’s statement below for further information. Funeral and memorial arrangements will be communicated in due course.
