About the Parish
Our Parish is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While Mary’s Immaculate Conception was already popular tradition and belief among Catholic scholars and clergy, it wasn’t until 1854, when Pope Pius IX published Ineffabilis Deus, that the doctrine of Mary’s Immaculate Conception became official Church dogma. Pope Pius IX also fully defined the dogma which, prior to Ineffabilis Deus, existed in many different forms throughout the universal church. The Immaculate Conception is not the celebration of Jesus’ conception by the Holy Spirit, nor is it the miracle of the virgin birth. The Immaculate Conception refers wholly to Mary’s conception without the stain of original sin. In Pope Pius IX’s words, the Blessed Virgin Mary “in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin.”
Through Baptism, we remove the stain of original sin, but this stain was never on Mary’s soul. It was excluded entirely. She was created as Adam and Eve were, without original sin. In fact Mary is known as the new or second Eve, who became mother to the new Adam, the Saviour of all humankind. Vision

To be a dynamic, thriving Catholic parish which utilises the considerable spiritual, intellectual and financial resources, as well as the talents of all of its members to:
•Propagate the teachings of Christ and the Church
•Be a haven where parishioners’ spiritual, liturgical and pastoral needs are satisfied in a welcoming, family-oriented, inclusive community that provides support and guidance throughout new life experiences. This is be achieved by aligning individuals’ spiritual life with the daily challenges of an increasingly secular world
•Fully understand the needs of its existing and prospective parishioners
•Reach out within and beyond the parish to evangelise and be a source of spiritual refuge, care and compassion
•Promote ecumenism through collaboration with other parishes, Christian faiths and other religions
•Be seen as professionally managed, theologically and liturgically compliant and an integral part of the Diocese

Mission

The Catholic parish of the Immaculate Conception in Rosebank Johannesburg comprises one priest and four deacons, who provide pastoral ministry and leadership through a wide range of parish activities. The parish also includes a very diverse congregation of at least 1400 Catholic families, who adhere to the tenets of their faith to various degrees in a wide catchment area in the northern suburbs. Under the direction of the Diocese, the parish seeks to evangelise by responding to the spiritual and human needs (through catechetics, contextual evangelical mission, education, pastoral work, the sacraments, lay movements and the nurturing of the community) of a predominantly secular, increasingly youthful society, experiencing the challenges of dramatic societal change. Today we celebrate the precious gift of the Holy Eucharist. Christ truly present among His people.

At every Mass, the Lord nourishes us with His very self. He comes to strengthen the weary, comfort the burdened, and unite us as one family in faith.

The Eucharist is not simply something we receive. It is an invitation into a deeper relationship with Christ and a deeper communion with one another.

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven.”
— John 6:51

🕊️ As we celebrate this beautiful feast, we invite you to join us at Mass and experience the gift that has sustained the Church for centuries.

Today we celebrate Christ, the Eternal High Priest, who offered Himself completely for the salvation of the world.

Through His sacrifice, Heaven and earth are united, mercy is poured out, and we are welcomed into the very life of God. Every priesthood finds its source in Him, and every Eucharist makes present the love He continues to pour out for His people.

🙏 Let us pray especially for our priests today, that they may be strengthened in their vocation and remain faithful servants of Christ and His Church.

“Because He remains forever, He has a priesthood that does not pass away.”
— Hebrews 7:24

How is Christ calling you to draw closer to Him this week?

Come, Holy Spirit 🕊️

On Pentecost the Church remembers the day fear gave way to courage, silence gave way to proclamation, and hearts were set ablaze with the presence of God.

The Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and filled them with divine grace, sending them forth to proclaim the Gospel to the nations. The same Spirit continues to guide, strengthen, and renew the Church today. ✨

“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.”

May the Spirit grant us wisdom in uncertainty, peace in difficulty, and boldness in faith, that we may live as true witnesses of the Risen Christ. 🌿📖

Today the Church celebrates the Ascension of the Lord ✨☁️

Christ returns to the Father not to leave His people behind, but to draw humanity toward heaven and prepare the way for eternal life. The Ascension reminds us that our hope is anchored beyond this world, where Christ reigns in glory and continually intercedes for us. 🕊️

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven?” Acts 1:11

As the disciples were sent forth with courage and faith, may we too be renewed in mission, trusting in the promise of His presence always. 🌿

Lord Jesus, lift our hearts toward heavenly things and strengthen us to be witnesses of Your truth, peace, and love in the world.
