Last Sunday we celebrated Mary Assumed into heaven, Patroness of South Africa. At the Diocesan Celebration in Lansdowne, Archbishop Sithembele Sipuka reflected on Mary's example of trust, surrender, compassion, and reconciliation. These are just a few thoughts drawn from the sermon.
Mary's journey "in haste" to visit Elizabeth reminds us that reconciliation begins when we move towards others rather than waiting for them to come to us. Her song, the Magnificat, presents a vision of God's justice that transforms hearts rather than destroys people. God cares deeply for those who have been harmed, while also calling those who have caused harm to conversion and a new way of life.
A central theme of the homily was that God's justice and mercy belong together. Victims deserve healing, support, and dignity, while offenders are called to repentance and transformation. In God's eyes, no one is beyond redemption.
The Assumption reminds us that nothing surrendered to God is ever wasted. Mary gave her whole life to God, and God brought forth something greater than she could have imagined. In the same way, we are invited to place our pain, grief, failures, fears, and hopes in God's hands, trusting that He can bring healing, freedom, and new life.
As Patroness of South Africa, may Mary continue to intercede for our nation, especially for victims of crime and violence, for offenders seeking a new path, and for all who work for peace, justice, healing, and reconciliation.

Covenant Day • August 2026

The Covenant of Love is more than a promise. It is a living relationship that transforms hearts and sends us out as instruments of renewal.

As we reflect on Fr. Joseph Kentenich's words from 1952, may we renew our own "Yes" to Mary. Let us allow ourselves to be formed in her school, guided by her maternal love, and available for God's mission in the world.

✨ May this Covenant Day renew our trust, deepen our commitment, and strengthen our desire to be bearers of hope wherever we are.

✨ Day 9 | Final Day of the Novena to Mary, Patroness of South Africa

Today we conclude our novena by praying the beautiful prayer entrusted to the Church in South Africa. As we honour Mary under the title Assumed into Heaven, we place our nation, our families, and our communities under her maternal protection.

May her powerful intercession help us to be people of justice and peace, care for those in need, respect the dignity of every human life, and live each day guided by love of neighbour.

As pilgrims on our journey to the Father, may we always walk with Mary and be led closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.

Mary, Assumed into Heaven, Patroness of South Africa, pray for us.

✨ Day 8 of the Novena to Mary, Patroness of South Africa

Today we reflect on our journey of faith as pilgrims walking towards the Father.

Mary, our Mother, accompanies us every step of the way. She encourages us to trust God's plan, grow in holiness, and remain faithful to Christ. Through her loving intercession, may we receive the wisdom, love, and graces we need for our pilgrimage of faith.

Let us pray especially for the Church in South Africa, that she may be strengthened in her mission to bring Christ's light to all.

Mary, Assumed into Heaven, Patroness of South Africa, pray for us.

✨ Day 7 of the Novena to Mary, Patroness of South Africa

Today we pray that love of neighbour may become our rule of life.

Mary's life was a witness to selfless love and service. She teaches us to care for one another, to bear each other's burdens, and to create communities marked by compassion, understanding, and generosity.

May her maternal example inspire us to love without counting the cost and to be instruments of Christ's peace wherever we are.

🇿🇦 Mary, Assumed into Heaven, Patroness of South Africa, pray for us.
