Tree of Life

Tree of Life Tree of Life is a family of families with a heart to see Manenberg transformed through the radical love of Jesus

We love Jesus, we love Manenberg and we love each other - these loves are our main motivation in cultivating a shared life of faith and hope. We aim to live in generative contradiction to the spirit of apartheid - relationally, economically and spiritually. We believe that there's a dynamic interrelationship between the health of marginalised communities and the general social scene. This leads us

to believe that Cape Town’s transformation is inextricably linked to the transformation of Manenberg. Our life together involves meeting in living rooms in small pockets across Manenberg, and gathering together as an extended family twice a month. We live out our love for each other and community day to day, in each other’s home, and through some of the work we do together.

This week, we're joining communities around the world for the Global Week of 24-7 Prayer.

Different cities. Different languages. Different churches and communities. One week of people choosing to stop, make space and pray.

And right here in Manenberg, our prayer room will be part of it.

There's something pretty special about knowing that while we pray for our streets, our neighbours, our families and our city, people around the world are doing the same for theirs.

Prayer has always been at the heart of Tree of Life. So getting to add our small ""yes"" to a much bigger movement feels pretty significant.

Why do we pray?

Not because we have all the right words or because prayer magically makes the hard things disappear.

We pray because we believe Jesus is present in the middle of it all.

In the addiction and recovery. The grief and celebration. The questions we don't have answers for. The decisions we have to make. The people and places we love deeply.

Prayer has always been woven into the everyday life of Tree of Life. Sometimes it's a room full of people worshipping. Sometimes it's a few of us around a table. Sometimes it's one person quietly praying for Manenberg.

Different spaces. Same posture:

Jesus, what are You doing here, and how can we join You?

How do we read the Bible with Manenberg in mind?

Who are we reading with?

Spiritual Formation is one of the regular rhythms at Tree of Life - it’s a space to go deeper into Scripture, explore the context it was written in, ask questions, wrestle with what we’re reading and think about what it means to follow Jesus here and now.

We’re not reading the Bible in a vacuum. We’re reading it in Manenberg. In a community where questions of justice, violence, poverty, family, forgiveness, hope and restoration are very real parts of everyday life.

So we keep opening the Bible together, asking questions and learning.

And we keep discovering what it looks like to follow Jesus right here, right where we are.

When a mother heals, her children experience the fruit of that healing too.

At Basila, we have the weighty privilege of watching women do the brave, everyday work of healing while raising their kids.

Every new tool learned, every healthier pattern formed, and every cycle broken becomes part of the story their children grow up knowing.

Tree of Life wouldn’t be what it is without our incredible women.

They lead with love, and pray with unshakeable faith. They parent so many of us. They carry vision, ask hard questions, and laugh the loudest.

Best of all, they keep loving this community, through it all, day after day.

We've got so many incredible women to celebrate at Tree of Life, and we're so grateful for how they've shaped our story and continue to partner with God in what He's doing in Manenberg.

God's not done yet, and neither are we!

It may just look like another boring church hall (with a snazzy new coffee hangout spot!)...
.but to us, it represents the answer to a prayer we've been praying for 10 years.

For years, we prayed for a space like this.
A place for prayer, healing, community, and restoration in the heart of Manenberg.

Now, those prayers are walls, rooms, and open doors.

To every donor, supporter and friend who has given and believed with us, thank you. This building stands as a physical answer to prayer!

Come visit us and check out the couches for yourself 😅
