Scriptures: John 13:34-35, 1Corinthians 3:1-3.
Proof text: John 13:34-35 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
Loving others wasn’t new - the Old Testament already said “love your neighbor” Leviticus 19:18. What’s new is the standard: “As I have loved you”*. Jesus is about to die for His disciples. So He’s raising the bar from “love like you love yourself” to “love like I love you” - self-sacrificial, undeserved, loyal love.
“Love one another”
He says it twice. This was said during the Last Supper, right after He washed their feet. So it’s not just a feeling. It’s action: serve, forgive, be patient, stick around when it’s hard. It’s how Christians treat each other inside the church family first.
*3. “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples”*
Jesus says our ID card as His followers isn’t perfect theology, church attendance, or arguing well. It’s love. When people see believers treating each other with kindness even when we disagree, that’s what makes outsiders stop and ask “what’s different about them?” Love becomes proof.
Key point in 1 line
Love like Jesus loved you, not just when it’s easy - that’s how the world recognizes real disciples.
