🌿 Devotional: Let the Fruit Show
Scripture: Galatians 5:22–23 (KJV)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
🌱 Reflection
A tree is often recognized by the fruit it produces. In the same way, our lives should reveal evidence that the Holy Spirit is working within us.
Paul calls these qualities “the fruit of the Spirit.” Notice that he says fruit, not fruits. These qualities are not simply separate personality traits we pick and choose. Together, they describe the kind of character the Holy Spirit develops in a life surrendered to God.
Love chooses to care even when love is not returned.
Joy remains when circumstances give us little reason to smile.
Peace reminds us that God is still in control when life feels uncertain.
Longsuffering gives us patience with difficult people and difficult seasons.
Gentleness changes the way we speak to and treat others.
Goodness moves us to do what is right even when no one is watching.
Faith keeps us trusting God when we cannot see what He is doing.
Meekness gives us strength without arrogance.
Temperance, or self-control, helps us say no to our impulses and yes to God’s will.
The important question is not simply, “Do I know these nine qualities?” The deeper question is, “Can people see them growing in me?”
It is easy to demonstrate love toward people who love us. It is easy to have joy when everything is going well. It is easy to have peace when there is no trouble. But the fruit of the Spirit becomes especially visible when life tests us.
When someone hurts us, love is tested.
When disappointment comes, joy is tested.
When trouble surrounds us, peace is tested.
When people get on our nerves, longsuffering is tested.
When we could respond harshly, gentleness is tested.
When doing wrong would be easier, goodness is tested.
When we cannot see the outcome, faith is tested.
When pride tells us to prove ourselves, meekness is tested.
And when our emotions tell us to react immediately, temperance is tested.
Sometimes God does not remove the situation immediately because He is using the situation to produce something in us.
A fruit tree does not strain to produce fruit overnight. It stays connected to its source, receives what it needs, and fruit develops over time. Likewise, spiritual fruit grows as we remain connected to Christ, listen to the Holy Spirit, obey God’s Word, pray, and allow God to change us from the inside out.
Our greatest testimony is not always what we say about Jesus. Sometimes it is how much of Jesus people can see in the way we live.
đź’ Thought for Today
If people examined the fruit of my life today, would they be able to tell that I have been spending time with Jesus?
Don’t become discouraged because every area has not fully developed. Fruit grows. Ask God to show you where growth is needed, then allow His Spirit to continue His work in you.
🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit. I don’t want to simply talk about being a Christian; I want my life to show that I belong to You.
Produce Your fruit in me. Help me to love when loving is difficult, have joy in every season, remain peaceful during trouble, and be patient with others. Make me gentle and good. Strengthen my faith, teach me humility, and give me self-control.
Lord, remove anything in my heart that prevents Your character from being seen through me. When people encounter me, may they experience Your love, Your grace, and Your presence.
Let my life bear fruit that brings glory to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
🌿 Today’s Challenge
Before you respond to someone, make a decision, or react to a difficult situation today, ask yourself:
“What fruit of the Spirit does this moment require from me?”
Then ask the Holy Spirit to help you demonstrate it.
Remember: The fruit we produce reveals the root we’re connected to. 🌱
