Is Isaiah 11 describing heaven? If so, will there be animals there? (submitted June 22)

Isaiah 11 appears to have been written shortly after the fall of (northern) Israel to the Assyrians in 722 BC. The Assyrians conquered Israel, then deported most of the Israelites to others lands (2 Kings 17). In light of this tragedy, Isaiah 11 reassures God’s people that God has not abandoned them (including Judah, which Assyria did not conquer), but has great plans for them. These plans hint at a future that in some ways has been fulfilled and that, in other ways, we today continue to anticipate eagerly.

This chapter speaks of the future in three parts. The first part, verses 1-5, focuses on a great, godly leader who will come at some point in Isaiah’s future: “A shoot…from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch…” Jesse’s family was the family of Israel’s great King David, the family of Israel’s/Judah’s kings. This leader would be empowered by the Spirit of the Lord and would rule with justice, righteousness, and faithfulness. The second part, verses 6-9, describes the peace of the land—and of the whole earth—under the leadership of this ruler. The peace would be so pervasive that even predators would be at peace with their prey, and little children would be safe among them. The third part, verses 10-16, foretell that “the Root of Jesse” (again, that ruler from David’s line) would rally all peoples to himself, and God would bring his exiled people home from Assyria and everywhere they had been scattered. He would also bring judgment on Israel’s enemies in the region, thereby giving his people complete security.

I think there are two levels of meaning and fulfillment to this passage. To Isaiah’s immediate audience in his time (late 700s BC), this prophecy promised God’s continuing care for his people in Israel and Judah. He would restore and protect them. God did, in fact, preserve the Israelites/Jews throughout history, repeatedly protecting them, though they fell to their enemies in times of unfaithfulness. No king of Israel/Judah, however, ever lived up to the promise of Isaiah 11—until that prophecy was fulfilled through Jesus, who was from the line of David, was empowered by God’s Spirit, and rules over all nations by his authority from God (Revelation 1:5). Romans 15:12 suggests that the “Root of Jesse” in Isaiah 11:10 is Jesus. He is the great ruler who brings peace to God’s people, conquers our enemies, and even brings peace between the animals and the people. That process is not yet finished, so we wait for the prophecy of Isaiah 11 to be fulfilled completely when Jesus comes again.

At that time, God will create new heavens and a new earth (Isaiah 65:17, 2 Peter 3:13, Revelation 21:1). Because a new earth will be part of that new creation, it is entirely possible—and I think very likely—that there will, in fact, be animals. This “new heavens and new earth” will also be “heaven” in the sense that God himself will be there with his people (Revelation 21:3). So if there are animals on the new earth, then because earth and heaven are one (God is with his people), yes, there will be animals in heaven.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Just a quick reminder that again at this month’s potluck coming up Sunday we will continue our new procedure, inviting our oldest folks and anyone using a cane, walker, or wheelchair to go first in the food line. We also ask parents/grandparents to keep their kids under age 13 or so with them through the line. (Once they’ve eaten, the kids are welcome to go back on their own for seconds.)
