Philippians 2:12-18

Do Everything Without Grumbling

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”[c] Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Hello all!

During the last few years, Children’s Church has slowly shifted to a slightly older target audience, which had some advantages, but after thinking about it and talking with some of the teens, I think it’s time to shift it back. Children’s Church needs to focus on the younger kids who aren’t yet ready to sit, listen, and understand at least parts of the sermon to teach them in a way that helps them learn to sit, listen, and understand!

So starting this week we are going back to Children’s Church being for kids ages 2-3 years through 4th grade with 5th-12th graders who are interested coming to help in pairs (I’ll set up a rotation and let the 2 helpers know each week who they are and what tasks I’ll need them for). I plan to read the stories from the Bible story book and keep the crafts and activities targeted at a bit younger age (but hopefully still interesting for the 3rd and 4th graders although I’m quite willing to be a bit boring by their standards if it means the youngest kids can participate more!).

As always, let me know if you have any questions and concerns, and if I didn’t get a chance to talk to your 5th-12th grader yesterday, tell them about the changes and let me know if they want to be on the helper rotation! (I know I missed Kenna, Sommie, and Maewyn – I might have caught everyone else?)

Philippians 2:1-11

Imitating Christ’s Humility

2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Life Worthy of the Gospel

27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,[e] striving together as one for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
