Bodhi Center of Yakima

Bodhi Center of Yakima The Bodhi Center of Yakima is dedicated to sharing Tibetan Buddhism. Tashi Delek! The Bodhi Center no longer has a physical location.

We have removed our Dharma items from the location on 6th Street in Yakima and put them into storage. We never were able to use the space as a group and felt that this would be the best option for us at this time. We will continue to investigate other physical locations if they become available to us. We are continuing with our weekly Zoom meetings. Our mailing address remains PO Box 1132 Yakima, WA 98907.

“Nowhere in either the Pāli or Sanskrit sūtras is the Buddha seen as either omnipotent or as a creator. He does not seek our worship, and we do not have to propitiate him to gain boons.

He does not reward those who follow his teachings and punish those who don’t. The Buddha described the path to awakening from his own experience.

His intention is only to benefit sentient beings according to their individual inclinations and temperament.”

Here are three things I want you to do every morning. First, meditate on your breath concentrating on the middle of your upper lip just below the nose, as you breath normally through your nose with your mouth closed. When you get distracted, return to the base of the nose. If you notice the breath passing at that point, focus on that sensation of the breath at that point. Do this for about 5 minutes, or more if you are already meditating. But please do not push. No judgement. Second, practice gratitude at least once. Gratitude for being alive. Gratitude for the next breath in, etc. Third, be kind to yourself at least once. Do these three things every day without fail. Emaho!

If you suffer, it is because of you. If you feel blissful, it is also because of you.

Your experience of life comes from within.

The same situation can feel like pain or peace, depending on how you see it.

You give meaning to everything. You create your reactions. No one else controls that.

When you understand this, you stop blaming the world and start mastering yourself.

Because heaven and hell are not places....they are states of your own mind.

Full message below:
On this auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima — Vesak — which commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni, I offer my heartfelt greetings and prayers to every member of our global Buddhist family.
This sacred day reminds us of the light that Shakyamuni Buddha brought into the world more than 2,500 years ago. Though the world has transformed beyond recognition since then, his teachings remain relevant today. His profound insight into dependent arising, and his call to harm no one and to help all beings, remain the most compassionate and practical guide for living in our troubled times.
Whenever I can, I encourage those who consider themselves followers of the Buddha to be 21st-century Buddhists: to discover what the teachings truly mean and to put them into practice. This entails listening and reading, reflecting deeply on what one has heard or read, and making oneself thoroughly familiar with it.
On this joyful celebration of the 2,570th Buddha Jayanti, I offer my greetings to all my Buddhist brothers and sisters. I pray that each of us, by bringing the Buddha's teachings into our own daily lives, may contribute to creating a happier and more peaceful world.
With my prayers and good wishes,
Dalai Lama

When you’re hot, you’re hot; when you’re not, you’re not. And that’s okay! We are all human (hopefully!). To err is to be human. Life if full of potholes, failures. What matters most is not the potholes or failures, but our response. We always have a choice. Train yourself for positive, courageous responses. There is a saying, “nine times failing, and nine times rising every time you fail.” This was said by former South African president, Nelson Mandela. It is also a motto in Tibetan culture as well as Japanese culture. There is much wisdom contained within. It is practical and free of guilt. We don’t beat ourselves up when we fail. Rather, we try to grow the best we can, and move forward free of guilt. Taking good care of ourselves is good mental health self-care to avoid mental exhaustion and workplace burnout, as well as being paramount for helping others fully. Emaho!

When a thought arises,
we look at it and simply rest with it.
We are not looking for anything special. .
This is all we need to do.”

Gratitude is living in grace. Living in grace means all is well inside, even when externally a tempest is brewing. We tend to forget that we are alive, and how precious that is! We tend to forget that we have a precious human rebirth, and how precious that is! Yes, there are a myriad of problems. Yet, we are alive in a precious human rebirth! Big picture. Big picture. Big picture. When external circumstances are extremely challenging, we tend to get lost in the weeds and fail to see the big picture. There is so much to be grateful for. Remind yourself of that again and again. At the end of the day, remember not only the 10 – 15% of things that went wrong. Remember also the other 85 – 90% of things that went well. Even congratulate yourself for these. It is perfectly okay. But avoid overdoing and morphing into arrogance. Be grateful of the little things. The pitter patter of the drops of rain. The blossoming of the flowers and trees. The cheerful chirping of the birds. All the incredibly courageous acts of kindness being performed each minute around the world, that doesn’t make the news as it doesn’t sell products. Be grateful for those around you. Be grateful of who you are, even if at times you don’t like yourself. Emaho!
