There will be a special Mass at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at the church in celebration of the Feast of Saint Bartholomew. All are encouraged to attend and ask for the intercession of our parish patron on his feast day!

We are very excited to announce that our own Ann Pershing will be presented with the Gallitzin Cross Award, a prestigious recognition for individuals throughout the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown who mirror the “evangelizing spirit” of the Prince-Priest and Servant of God Demetrius Gallitzin, by Bishop Mark Bartchak in recognition for her lifelong commitment to her Catholic faith and her selfless devotion to building up the Saint Bartholomew parish family. Ann was one of many nominated and is one of the thirteen selected by Bishop Mark to receive the award this year.

A few years back, our beloved Mary Jane Knisel was presented with this award, and we are honored to have another Gallitzin Cross awarded to one of our parishioners.

Ann will be presented the Gallitzin Cross by Bishop Mark at a banquet and ceremony, which will be held on Friday, October 9 at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Ebensburg. Check out this post about the early history of our parish from the Portage Area Historical Society! We are blessed to have a such a rich history rooted in the missionary work of the prince-priest and Servant of God Father Demetrius Gallitzin!

#89- First Church

History of Portage as told by Father Habrowski, 1947, Cambria Dispatch:

The first church about here was the Catholic Church at Wilmore, due to the influx of the Irish to build the railroad.

Most of the people walked to church in the summer time. It was the farmers who had horses that rode in to hear Mass said. In the winter time they used sleds.

The first wheeled vehicles used about here was a carriage bought by James Wilmore about 1852. Other people used the Allegheny Portage Railroad, on which trains did not run on Sundays, they ran a private car hauled up the light grade about 42 feet to the mile on the "Long Level" to Jefferson (Wilmore), by a horse, from whence on the return trip after Mass it was allowed to drop down grade by the use of a brake something like that ued on a wagon. This car would hold a couple dozen people at least, and was one of the first cars used for this purpose.
