If I’m interested in becoming a Stephen Minister, what do I do?
Application Process: Start by expressing interest by contacting the pastor or Stephen Ministry Leaders. You'll be asked to submit a formal written application and may complete a spiritual gifts assessment.
Interview and Discernment: After application, prospective Stephen Ministers are interviewed by ministry leaders and may attend a discernment meeting to discuss motivation, spiritual gifts, and commitment of readiness. Not every applicant advances to the training; selection is based on aptitude for compassionate care.
Background Checks: In some cases, a background check is required before beginning training.
Training Commitment: Selected candidates complete 50 hours of training over several months beginning in September 2026 or January 2027, learning about active listening, confidentiality, boundaries, crisis situations, and spiritual care. Training is interactive, with reading assignments, group participation, and skill-building exercises.
Ongoing Service: After training and commissioning in a public worship service, Stephen Ministers meet weekly with care receivers and attend monthly or bi-weekly supervision meetings for ongoing support and education. Initial service requires a minimum commitment of two years.
