Two Dangers
When it comes to the assurance of salvation, the Scriptures warn against two things: false assurance and endless insecurity. The first is false assurance: "I prayed a prayer once, so it doesn't matter how I live now." Scripture does not support that lazy conclusion. The same Bible that gives us wonderful promises of security also calls us to examination, obedience, perseverance, and growth. A life of stubborn, unrepentant sin contradicts any claim to know Christ.
The second is endless insecurity: "I struggle, so I can never know whether I am saved." That completely ignores 1 John 5:13, John 10:28, and Romans 8:1. God clearly intends for His children to live with a settled confidence in Christ. True believers do struggle with sin, doubt, and weakness, but our salvation rests on Jesus' completed work on the cross, not on sinless performance. Eternal life is found in Jesus. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” (1 John 5:11-12 KJV) If someone has never truly repented and believed, there is no real basis for assurance. The answer is to come to Jesus in genuine repentance and faith. Jesus saves!
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13 KJV
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.” John 10:27-29 KJV
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Romans 8:1 KJV
“for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 3:23 KJV
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 KJV
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 KJV
“that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10 KJV
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Romans 10:13 KJV
“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 KJV
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV
