Cynthia Kauffman, and Debra Palazzo, descendants of Revolutionary War patriots, co-foundered the organization, the Daughters of Liberty’s Legacy. And they set up the morning’s memorial program, attired in the dress of that era, with Cynthia representing Elijah Miller’s widow as she told the story of his sacrifice.

A little later his “daughter“ told the story of her two brothers and the tragedy that they also had given their lives a few months later for the cause – the cause of freedom.

And so on Sunday, August 23, 2026, as the dark clouds of the rainy morning gave way to bright sunshine (just as the founding families had lived through the dark days of the war, and emerged into the bright light of their freedom) members of the Daughters of Liberty’s Legacy, some of the WPPC congregation and some descendants of founding families gathered under The Big Tree in the cemetery next to the Miller family’s gravestones, which were decorated with red roses and flags.
As we gave thanks for Elijah Miller and his sons, we also remembered the six thousand or more soldiers, and the many other people who had given their lives during that war – remembered, and celebrated with gratitude.

Welcome to the Rev. Dr. Philomena Ofori-Nipaah !

Now thank we all our God
With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom His world rejoices:
Who from our mother’s arms
Has blest us on our way, with countless gifts of love And still is ours today.
Martin Rickert c.1636

Echoing across three hundred and ninety years, these words of Pastor Rickert really ARE still true today, as we give thanks for God‘s gift to us - our long-awaited Interim Minister. On Tuesday, September 1 (just around the corner) the Rev. Dr. Philomena Ofori-Nipaah will join us in her role as Interim Minister of the White Plains Presbyterian Church.

Rev. Philomena comes bearing many gifts…The gift of her profound faith that imbues her own life and ministry in every way; the gift of being able to share that faith through her sincerity in preaching and teaching; the gift of years of education (a Master’s degree in Divinity, a Doctorate in Ministry, an introductory and an advanced course in Transitional/Interim Ministry – and a B. Sc.in Nursing!) the gift of her skills in pastoral counseling and her warm, caring personality.

Rev. Philomena most recently has been the solo pastor for the past two and half years in Grand Rapids, Michigan, following nearly seven years in roles as Interim Pastor at Presbyterian churches in Michigan, and also in Maryland. She been much involved in the Greater Church (i.e. Committees, Presbyteries, organizations etc.)

We are truly blessed to have her come to the WPPC church and look forward our journey together as we all increase our own faith and enhance the WPPC’s role in conveying Christ’s teaching to others. We give thanks to The Lord and pray that Rev. Philomena’s time with us will be a blessing to her, as we know it will be a blessing to us!
