Day one of the 227th Annual Conference Session is behind us, and it was a fruit-full day of holy conferencing with worship, fellowship, and the business of the church all woven together.

Opening Worship came alive mid-day under the leadership of Jorge Lockward and his team of gifted vocalists and musicians. They paired laity and clergy together to share stories of Loving Boldly in their own communities, seamlessly weaving the theme of our gathering into worship and putting flesh on what bold love actually looks like in practice.

We also took up an offering for Immigration Law and Justice New York, the United Methodist immigration ministry, turning the theme into something concrete.

Bishop Bickerton's sermon, "No Strings Attached," carried that same word. Preaching from John 15:9-17, he told the story of a grandfather who lost his grandson in a robbery and, when asked if he wanted revenge, said it simply wasn't possible, not because he didn't know who did it, but because he was a Christian. Some have called that kind of response unrealistic. He named that doubt and pointed past it. There is a different way, the way of loving as Christ loved us, no strings attached.

From there we shared Holy Communion, called the 227th to order, cast our first delegate votes, and the James D. Lawson Antiracism Sub-commission of CCORR presented Rev Dr. William G. Smartt and Rev. Leo W. Curry with awards acknowledging their ministries. A powerful Word from Deaconess Gail Douglas-Boykin, our Conference Lay Leader, closed the evening with the Laity Session and a workshop from Chris Wilterdink on Young People's Discipleship.

One day in. Grateful for the people in that room and the work still to come. See you tomorrow.

Behind the scenes with Bishop Bickerton, members of the NYAC Cabinet, and our siblings in the at the 2026 New England Annual Conference session in Manchester, New Hampshire.

It's the first full day of holy conferencing for NE and already, the morning is off to a wonderful start with spirit-filled worship music, courtesy of our own Jorge Lockward and a team of talented musicians from NY and NE. Bishop Bickerton offered a deeply inspiring Word and there was time set aside this morning for fellowship and re-connection.

Annual Conference season in the is off to a wonderful start in Manchester, New Hampshire! A Clergy Luncheon hosted by the Preachers' Aid Society of New England marked the start of holy conferencing in the New England Annual Conference.

Bishop Bickerton brought greetings and encouraged our New England siblings to “lighten up, loosen up and have a little fun.” Bishop reminded all, "We’re here to explore life together. We will have conversation, but most of all can we leave this place feeling renewed and blessed by the spirit of God that is in this place?”

Today will be a full one and we'll keep you posted as we journey through this season: New England and New York, stronger together!

This Sunday, May 31 is Peace with Justice Sunday, one of the six Special Sundays observed across the United Methodist Church. The day calls us to reflect on and respond to the systemic forces that disrupt peace and perpetuate injustice in communities near and far, and to put faith into action.

NYAC congregations that are still planning for an observance can find worship resources, giving information, and background offered by the NYAC Board of Church and Society on our site at nyac.com/2026-peace-with-justice-sunday

It is not too late to make the day meaningful and to connect your community to the wider work of justice United Methodists are called to do.
