Gift Card Scam Targeting Church Members (PLEASE READ!!)

Dear Church Family,

We want to make you aware of a gift card scam that is targeting church members. Scammers are impersonating pastors, church staff, or other trusted church leaders and asking members to purchase gift cards and send the gift card numbers and PINs.

Please be especially alert for messages that say things like:

“I need a favor. Are you available?”
“Can you purchase a few gift cards for me?”
“Please scratch off the back and send me the numbers/PINs.”
“I’m in a meeting and can’t call right now.”
“This is urgent and needs to be kept confidential.”

The scammer may use the name, photo, or other information belonging to a pastor or church member. Even if the message appears to come from someone you know, do not assume it is legitimate. Email addresses and phone numbers can be spoofed, and scammers often create accounts that look very similar to legitimate ones.

Our church will NOT ask you to purchase gift cards and send us the card numbers or PINs.

If you receive a suspicious request:

Do not purchase any gift cards.
Do not send gift card numbers, PINs, photographs, or receipts.
Do not reply to the suspicious message.
Contact the person directly using a phone number or email address you already know is theirs. Do not use the phone number, email address, or other contact information provided in the suspicious message.
If you have already purchased a gift card or sent the card information, contact the gift card company immediately and report the fraud. Keep the gift card and receipt.

Please share this warning with other members of your household, especially anyone who may be less familiar with these types of scams.

When in doubt, stop and verify before sending money or gift cards. A legitimate church leader will understand if you take the time to confirm a request.
