FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Thy will be done. No greater
words than these
Can pass from human lips,
than these that rent
Their way through agony and
bloody sweat,
And broke the silence of Gethsemane
To save the world from sin.

May richer, fuller be.

An atheist sent a young man
a parcel of infidel literature, advising him to read it in preference
to the Bible. His reply could not
be excelled. He wrote: “Dear Sir,
If you have anything better than
the Sermon on the Mount, the
Parable of the Prodigal Son, and
that of the Good Samaritan, or if
you have a code of morals better
than the Ten Commandments, or
anything more consoling and beautiful than the twenty-third Psalm, or, on the whole, anything
that will throw more light on the
future and reveal to me a Father
more merciful and kind than the New Testament, send it along.” The Bible, “none like it” (I Sam. 21:9).

REMEMBERING BARNEY

Barney Whitefish had gone over
to the General Store at Hydesville
to get some things for Ma. After
finding everything on the list, he
went to pay for his collection. He
found there was a young lady in
front of him paying for her things.
As she was paying the clerk, she
was relating a situation that was
going on at her home. It seemed
the lady was the mother of five
young children and she had her
hands full taking care of them.
For that reason, she was taken
aback one day when her hus-band brought home a gift – a
frisky young puppy. The children
were all exited and asked their
mother what they should name
the puppy. She told them, “You
had better call it ‘Mother’, be-cause if that dog stays, I’m going….!?”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The stone you might have lifted
Out of a brother’s way;
The bit of heartsome counsel
You were hurried too much to
say;
The loving touch of the hand,
dear,
The gentle, winning tone
Which you had no time nor
thought for
With troubles enough of your
own.
- Margaret Sangster

Did you know that a mob from
the community came to UBS on
a prayer meeting night and was
going to tar and feather William
Smith? This was because the
school was Quaker and would not support the war in Europe. William handled the affair judici-
ously, answered a lot of ques-tions, and the group left with-
out incident.

One evening Rev. T. D. Adams
announced the hymn of Mr. Bliss’,
“I know He is mine.” As no one
else knew the song, but the young lady organist, she was ob-
liged to sing it alone. The singing
of the first stanza convicted her;
the second showed her her need
of Christ. During the singing of the
third, the tears streamed down
her face. At the close of the song,
she rose and announced that dur-
ing its singing she had been con-
verted.

Alex DeTocqueville, noted
French political philosopher of the

America ever ceases to be good,
America will cease to be great.”

Did you know that God’s re-
quirement that the Jews circum-
cise their boys on their eighth

meaning but also was medically
correct? It is on the eighth day
that the coagulating factor of
the blood is the highest and the

REMEMBERING BARNEY

Barney Whitefish was out in the back yard with a hoe when the
preacher stopped by for a visit.
“What are you doing with a hoe?”
asked the preacher. “Well,” said
Barney, “I saw a snake out by the
chicken coop, so I got my hoe
and did away with him.” “I proba-
bly would have done the same
thing,” said the preacher. “But
when I was at Church Camp recently, I saw a friend of mine that
just loves snakes.” “He can have
all he wants,” said Barney. “I was
over at the barber shop the other day, and there was an insurance man in there that said he was signin’ a man up for a policy. He
said he asked the man if he had
ever had an accident. The man
said, “Nope,” then he added as
an afterthought, “Got a couple
rattlesnake bites, though.” “Well,”
said the insurance man, “Don’t
you call those accidents?” “No,
sir!” he said, “They bit me on purpose….!?”

Your mind is a garden,
Your thoughts are the seeds;
You can grow flowers Or you can grow weeds.

“Being justified by faith, we
have peace with God through
our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- Rom. 5:1

Speaking of justification,
Charles G. Finney says of his ex-
perience, “My sense of guilt was
gone; my sins were gone; and I
do not think I felt any more sense
of guilt than if I never had sin-
ned.”
- Charles G. Finney
The greatest blessing we ever
get from God is to know that we
are destitute spiritually.
- Oswald Chambers

* * *

Christian parents must be vig-
ilant to train and protect their kids
in a culture that has lost its moral
compass…Today the devil has a
virtual megaphone pointed at our
children through vehicles like soc-
ial media, movies, streaming plat-
forms, video games, music, edu-
cational resources, and, sadly,
even churches...We are living in a
culture that has largely rejected
the idea that truth exists or can be
known, especially when it comes
to religion and morality.
- Alisa Childers

of me by those who know me
best that I have always plucked a
thistle and planted a flower when
I thought a flower would grow.”

“Imagine if you were lost in the
wilderness and you asked for help
and the response was, ‘You are
your own compass.’ That doesn’t
make you feel more found. It ma-
kes you feel more profoundly lost.”
- Jeff Myers

While Luther was taking refuge
in Wartburg Castle and was trans-
lating the Bible into German, as he was sitting in his room one day
he was sorely tempted. So strong
did the temptation come that
he fancied the devil came to
him in bodily form and stood on
the other side of the table at
which he sat. He resisted him
bodily and threw arguments and
texts at his head. Finally, becom-
ing excited, he picked up the
heavy inkstand nearby and hurl-
ed it at his invisible foe. It crash-
ed against the wall, and to this
day the traditional mark is shown
to visitors in a room at the castle.

Make use of time, if you value
eternity. Yesterday cannot be re-
called; tomorrow cannot be as-
sured; today only is yours. But
if you procrastinate, you lose to-

REMEMBERING BARNEY

Barney Whitefish had gone over to the bank at Hydesville to
make a deposit in his account.
The customer in front of him was
opening a new account for his
son, so Barney had to wait for a
few minutes. When Barney got up
to the counter, the lady appoli-gized for his wait while she open-
ed the new account. After Barney made his deposit, he asked the
the lady if they had ever had an
account closed. “Yes,” said the
lady, “but not very many, and if
we do, the president of the bank
sends a letter of regret and asks
if there were possible reasons for
closing the account. “Do you get
any response?” asked Barney.
The lady smiled and said, “We
got one back from a young lady
with this note: “I married Account
Number 064-1877….?!”
