FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Little things matter:
For want of a nail, a shoe was
lost,
For want of a shoe, a horse was
lost,
For want of a horse, a battle was
lost,
For want of a battle, a kingdom
was lost,
And all for the want of a horse-
shoe nail.
- James Balbwin

A praying man or woman al-
ways leaves that distinct impres-
sion upon others.
- Jim Cymbala

The followers of our crucified
Lord, desirous of avoiding every-
thing that might minister to the
natural vanity of the human heart,
and thus imperceptibly lead away
from that humility which was
known to be an essential requi-
site to the character of a true
Christian, renounced the vanities
of the world, and set an example
of simplicity in life and conduct.
- W. Hodgson

If Christian nations were nations
of Christians, there would be no
wars.
- Soame Jenyns

Living in the world, but not of the world, can be a challenge for
Christ followers. The English preacher Charles Spurgeon once
said, “I believe that one reason
why the church of God at this pre-
sent moment has so little influ-
ence over the world is because
the world has so much influence
over the church.”
Though we live in a different cov-
enant, our call to holiness re-mains. In what way might we be
compromising and letting cultural
influences draw us away from
God’s commands?
- Today In The Word

GOD IS OUR REFUGE

Repentance is a change of mind; a resolve to take the neces-
sary steps for securing salvation.
It is the result of “Godly sorrow” for sin, and of a conviction that we need a Savior.
- Dougan Clark, Quaker professor

Faith is not an intellectual
state, it is a voluntary trust.
- Charles G. Finney

If I knew where I was going to
die, I would stay away from that
place.
- Bud Robinson

Did you know that after surg-ery, transgender people are 20
times more likely to die by sui-cide?
- Walt Heyer

Did you know that the motto
“In God We Trust” first appeared
on U. S. coins in 1864, to boost
the country’s morale during the
Civil War?

What is the character of a
watch? Modesty: It keeps its
hands over its face and runs
down its own works.

REMEMBERING BARNEY
Recently Barney Whitefish was over in Hydesville to attend a
funeral. The minister used the
expression, “Ashes to ashes,
dust to dust.” Barney wasn’t sure
what that meant, so after the ser-
vice, he asked someone near
him. “Well,” they answered, “it means that we all come from
dust, and we shall all return to
dust.” When Barney got home, he was telling Ma about it. Later
in the afternoon, Barney was sur-
prised to hear Ma calling down
from the bedroom. “Come quick,
Barney, there’s someone under
the bed and I don’t know if he is coming or going….?!”
- JAC(vs)

Preceding a service I attend-ed, an older gentleman arose,
walked to the church door, and
yelled, “Get out of here, old
devil!” Just at that moment, a
couple was standing at the door
ready to enter. With great embar-
rassment, the old gentleman ex-
explained, “Oh, I didn’t mean
you!”

PRAYER CHANCES THINGS

Did you know that the first graduating class of Union High
School in 1879 had one girl in it?
Her name was Manzanita Cov-ode. While being co-ed was quite
rare in those days, Union High had been since its beginning in
1861. - UBC

Worry, the interest paid by those who borrow trouble.
- George Washington

The incredible design and regularity throughout the universe indicate a masterful designer. And
since matter cannot create itself,
it indicates an invisible and spiritual Cause. In other words, the material is proof of the spiritual,
which is none other than God.
- LG

* * *
Did you know that a liar is not
believed, even when he speaks
the truth?
- TSP

* * *
Did you know that William
Pinkham, the author of The Lamb
of God, which is a “Spiritual Philo-
sophy of the Atonement,” was a
Quaker who attended and/or
taught at Cleveland Bible Institute
when William Smith attended
there?
- LG

***
“At school one day a young lady
fashioned a hat out of burdock
burrs and presented it to me; without a second thought, I slapped that burr hat tightly down up-
on my head. There was only one
way to remove the hat and that
was with a pair of scissors, and
I went home from school that day
with much less hair than I came
with. I was nearly peeled on top
of the head, but I still retained a
fringe of long hair around the
edge.”
- John T. Hatfield

* * *
God’s will is the most important
factor in every situation. To know
that will and have power to perform it, we must constantly turn to
God in prayer.
- SBB

George Whitefield was 22 when
he began to preach. He was more
of a leader and innovator than
Wesley. In Feb. 1739, Whitefield
preached at Bermondsey Church.
The crowd was so large that the
churchyard was filled. Whitefield
went outdoors and preached to a
congregation of 200.
- W. Deuwel

Did you know that when the
ground temperature is below
freezing, it can’t hail?

REMEMBERING BARNEY
Recently Barney Whitefish was over in Hydesville and met up
with the preacher. In the course of their conversation, they saw
a man with an unusual hairdo ac-
cross the way. Barney mention-
ed it would probably be hard to
comb his hair with it like that. The
preacher agreed and then asked,
“Barney, do you know weather
men usually part their hair with their right hand or left hand?” “Well Preacher,” replied Barney, “That is a good question, but I
would guess probably with their
right hand.” The preacher smiled
and said, “Actually, Barney, they
part their hair with a comb….?!”

Ever hear of Orville Gibson?
He got a job working in a show
store in Kalamazoo, MI. In his
spare time his hobby was building musical instruments. By 1902, his musical instruments
were so popular that he incorporated the Gibson Mandolin and
Guitar Company. The rest is his-
tory.
