FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Little things matter:
For want of a nail, a shoe was
lost,
For want of a shoe, a horse was
lost,
For want of a horse, a battle was
lost,
For want of a battle, a kingdom
was lost,
And all for the want of a horse-
shoe nail.

The followers of our crucified
Lord, desirous of avoiding every-
thing that might minister to the
natural vanity of the human heart,
and thus imperceptibly lead away
from that humility which was
known to be an essential requi-
site to the character of a true
Christian, renounced the vanities
of the world, and set an example
of simplicity in life and conduct.

Living in the world, but not of the world, can be a challenge for
Christ followers. The English preacher Charles Spurgeon once
said, “I believe that one reason
why the church of God at this pre-
sent moment has so little influ-
ence over the world is because
the world has so much influence
over the church.”
Though we live in a different cov-
enant, our call to holiness re-mains. In what way might we be
compromising and letting cultural
influences draw us away from
God’s commands?

GOD IS OUR REFUGE
Repentance is a change of mind; a resolve to take the neces-
sary steps for securing salvation.
It is the result of “Godly sorrow” for sin, and of a conviction that we need a Savior.

Did you know that the motto
“In God We Trust” first appeared

What is the character of a
watch? Modesty: It keeps its
hands over its face and runs

REMEMBERING BARNEY
Recently Barney Whitefish was over in Hydesville to attend a
funeral. The minister used the
expression, “Ashes to ashes,
dust to dust.” Barney wasn’t sure
what that meant, so after the ser-
vice, he asked someone near
him. “Well,” they answered, “it means that we all come from
dust, and we shall all return to
dust.” When Barney got home, he was telling Ma about it. Later
in the afternoon, Barney was sur-
prised to hear Ma calling down
from the bedroom. “Come quick,
Barney, there’s someone under
the bed and I don’t know if he is coming or going….?!”

Preceding a service I attend-ed, an older gentleman arose,
walked to the church door, and
yelled, “Get out of here, old
devil!” Just at that moment, a
couple was standing at the door
ready to enter. With great embar-
rassment, the old gentleman ex-
explained, “Oh, I didn’t mean
you!”
