- From Scripture, we can see that God has always wanted His people to be more than just a voice; He wants us to be witnesses—lives living out the message we proclaim (Acts 1:8).

- And starting yestefday, we began looking at the book of Daniel and how he truly was a Prophetic Witness in a Foreign Land.

1. The Attack Allowed (1:1-2)

- If you look into this, you will find that King Jehoiakim not only rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar but actually disobeyed the Word of God from the prophet Jeremiah (27:9-11).

- Therefore, one can be assured that this attack in Daniel 1 was allowed by our sovereign God as a punishment for and consequence of Jehoiakim’s sin.

- And like with all sin, these consequences affected others.

2. The Assignment Given (vs. 3-8)

- It is at this point that we are first introduced to the young man named Daniel and how these circumstances of his world affected him and his friends.

- All in all, from the long training to the food they were eating to their name changing, what were the Babylonians seeking to do to these young men? Change their identities from God’s chosen people to Babylonians.

- They will learn to talk like Babylonians, be educated like Babylonians, eat like Babylonians, and have names like Babylonians that honor their gods.

Conclusion

- Next week we will look at Daniel’s response to this, but what can we glean from our passage here?

- That, when it comes to our Prophetic Witness as Christians, this Foreign Land will seek to choose or change our identity like it did with Daniel & his friends.

- So, as Prophetic Witnesses, may we protect ourselves from this Foreign Land seeking to change and choose our identities away from how God sees us.

- Reminding ourselves that we aren’t called to just scream condemnation as prophetic voices in exile, but also share and show them a better way, like Daniel, as prophetic witnesses with another home.

- Leading one author to state: “Only in exile can you see your home clearly.”
