On Sunday, Greg continued the series “Hidden” by recounting Eve’s temptation by the serpent in the garden that led to not only banishment but also separation from God. It’s a given that satan deceived Eve by making her question the very command of God. What’s not so obvious is the hidden desires of Adam and Eve’s heart.
Genesis 3:6 reads, “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.” This tells us that Eve examined the fruit, her eyes liked what she saw, and she was convinced there was something to gain from it. Eve doesn’t stop there. Continuing in verse 6, it reads, “She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” This led to Adam’s choice to go against God’s command, as well.
Adam and Eve’s choice to eat the fruit not only brought physical death, but also eternal death (separation from God). Sin entered the world and developed a growing appetite by man. However, through God’s grace, before the creation of the world, He chose His son Jesus as the sin payment for every one of us. It is through Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection that the serpent’s head has been crushed, and Jesus reigns in victory. Therefore, we must overcome sinful desires by being hungry for God’s presence, purpose and promises.
