Ramps of Grace

Ramps of Grace We are a ministry that builds access ramps for those confined to a wheelchair and cannot afford to hire a contractor.

We build temporary handicap ramps for those who live in the margin of society.

Short and straight. Doesn't get much easier than the ramp we built today! We also were able to reuse modules from another ramp.

We built this short ramp a few weeks ago in Carmichaels, PA, but didn't take any pictures at the time.

We had just enough space between the fence and the deck for our ramp build yesterday. The tight fit made it more difficult to build, but we squeezed it in while preserving the existing steps.

We were blessed again this year with support from a Youth Mission group from New Jersey. The group visits SWPA annually, and have helped us build ramps for several years. This year, 4 adults and about 15 high school aged kids helped us:

- build 3 ramps, two of the which were metal ramps recovered from other homes
- buy and load lumber required for a long wooden ramp in Roscoe, PA
- recover, move and install a metal ramp to a location near Washington, PA
- build modules for the next ramp

They worked with us from Monday through Wednesday and really helped us catch up on requests that have sat idle through the winter. Our Thanks go out to these very helpful young people! Bless You!!!

The Pittsburgh area may be unique in its culture of long, outdoor stairways. These steps connect neighborhoods separated by significant elevation. Our ramp installation yesterday was about halfway down a set of almost 100 concrete steps. With no access by road, we had to carry all of the materials and all of the tools down to the house ... then back up again! We were lucky to have volunteers from EQT to help us out. Attached is a picture of the finished ramp, along with a look up the stairs from the front yard.

We've had the modules for this build ready to install since early December. But snow and temperatures forced an extended break for the crew. Today, we bolted 11 modules together in a typical U-turn configuration to give the homeowner a means to leave her home.

We postponed the installation of this ramp several times, since before Thanksgiving, in fact. Weather at this time of year plays havoc with our schedule. But we finally got a break and were able to install our first ramp for 2026 today.

As we wind down another year, we are challenged to find days when the weather allows us to build. We built this ramp in Waynesburg today and it was WAY too cold! Towards the end, frozen fingers made it tough to feel and hold the screws. But the build went well, the owner was pleased and nobody got hurt. A good day.

Our method of building ramps is to build modules in a shop, and bolt everything together in the field. We don't haul lumber to the site and build from scratch ... until today. This homeowner had an existing ramp that was deteriorated and extremely unsafe. We cut the rot away, used the existing posts and installed a new ramp by noon.
