Tenebrae, Latin for “darkness” or “shadows”, is a moving Holy Week service of sung Psalms and readings that reflects on the Passion and death of Christ. Rooted in the Church’s ancient Liturgy of the Hours, Tenebrae invites the faithful into a solemn meditation through haunting chant, dim light, and powerful symbolism.
During the service, candles are gradually extinguished, recalling the growing darkness at Christ’s crucifixion and the abandonment He endured. A single candle, representing Christ, is hidden near the end, and the service concludes with a loud noise (the strepitus), symbolizing the upheaval of creation at His death.
Often observed on Spy Wednesday, Tenebrae serves as a prayerful preparation for the Easter Triduum. Through its stark beauty and silence, it calls us to reflect on our sins, enter into the mystery of Christ’s suffering, and await the hope of the Resurrection.

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of St. Joseph, the spouse of Mary and foster father of Jesus. Though no words of his are recorded in Scripture, his life speaks volumes through his actions. He shows us the power of quiet holiness, unwavering trust, and humble service.
May we all strive to live with his silent strength and trust in God’s plan, even when it feels uncertain.
