Today, as we open the gates for the 40th Annual Holy Trinity Greek Festival, I want to share a Greek word that is difficult to translate into English, yet it may be one of the most important words in our culture:
Philotimo (Φιλότιμο).
Philotimo is more than kindness. More than generosity. More than hospitality.
It is the God-given desire to do what is right simply because it is right. It is serving others without expecting anything in return. It is treating every person with dignity, respect, and love. It is opening your heart, your home, and your table to others.
For weeks and months, hundreds of volunteers have worked tirelessly preparing food, baking pastries, setting up booths, decorating grounds, and planning every detail of this festival. They do it not for recognition, but because of Philotimo.
And when you walk through our gates today, Philotimo belongs to you as well.
Whether you are a first-time visitor or someone who has attended for forty years, you become part of our family. You honor us with your presence, and we welcome you with grateful hearts.
As you enjoy the food, music, dancing, fellowship, and faith that make this festival so special, know that everything you experience has been prepared with love, sacrifice, and Philotimo.
May God bless all who enter our festival grounds, all who serve, and all who gather together in friendship and community.
Welcome to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and our 40th Annual Greek Festival.
Philotimo. It is the Greek way. It is the Christian way. It is the way of the heart.
With gratitude and love,
Anthony Nick Mougianis
