DAILY ENTRY BEHEADING OF THE HOLY GLORIOUS PROPHET, FORERUNNER, AND BAPTIST JOHN

Today the Holy Church stands in awe before the sacred and terrible mystery of righteousness, truth, and martyrdom revealed in the Beheading of the Forerunner. Saint John the Baptist, the greatest born of woman, the voice crying in the wilderness, the friend of the Bridegroom, seals his earthly witness with blood. His entire life was a living sermon—his conception miraculous, his asceticism fiery, his preaching fearless, his humility perfect. Yet today we behold the culmination of his ministry: the Forerunner’s unwavering proclamation of God’s truth confronts the corruption of earthly power, and the world responds with violence. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a just and holy man, yet he feared the opinion of men more than the judgment of God. Herodias, enslaved to passion, resented the prophet’s rebuke. And the daughter, manipulated into wickedness, becomes the instrument of a crime that shakes heaven and earth. The head of the Baptist—whose voice thundered repentance, whose hand pointed to the Lamb of God—is delivered on a platter, and the world imagines it has silenced righteousness.
But the Church knows better. The Forerunner’s voice is not silenced; it becomes eternal. His martyrdom is not defeat; it is victory. His death is not an end; it is a beginning. Even in Hades he announces Christ, preparing the way of the Lord in the depths as he once did in the wilderness. Today’s strict fast is not merely ascetical discipline—it is a trembling acknowledgment of the gravity of sin, the cost of truth, and the holiness of the one who stood between heaven and earth as the bridge of repentance. We refrain from eating from plates or platters, remembering the horror of the world’s mockery of holiness, and we ask God to cleanse our hearts from every compromise, every cowardice, every passion that would make us resemble Herod or Herodias more than the Forerunner.
Let us therefore take courage from Saint John’s example. In an age when truth is often unwelcome, when righteousness is mocked, and when the passions seek to rule, the Forerunner teaches us steadfastness. He teaches us that fidelity to God is worth every cost, that repentance is the doorway to life, and that Christ alone is the measure of all things. May his boldness inspire our speech, his purity strengthen our hearts, his humility shape our service, and his intercessions guard our Diocese. And may we, like his disciples who buried his sacred body, remain faithful even in sorrow, knowing that the Lord whom John proclaimed is near to all who call upon Him in truth. Through the prayers of the holy Forerunner, may Christ form His life within us, granting peace, courage, and salvation to all who honor this solemn and radiant feast.

Today we honor our venerable father Job of Pochaev, the steadfast ascetic whose hidden labor, patient endurance, and unwavering trust in God made him a pillar of monastic life, together with Moses the Ethiopian, once a violent man who became a radiant vessel of humility and spiritual wisdom; their witness calls us to crucify the passions, to bear one another’s burdens in meekness as taught in the Epistle, and to follow Christ with the compassion shown in today’s Gospel, where the Lord feeds the multitude and heals all who draw near, revealing that divine mercy is never exhausted for those who seek Him with contrite hearts.

Today we honor the steadfast Martyrs Adrian and Natalia, whose united witness in suffering reveals the strength of Christian marriage; the wonderworking Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, through which the Theotokos continually shelters the faithful; and our venerable Father Tithoës of the Thebaid, radiant in desert wisdom. In the weekly cycle Tuesday is dedicated to the Holy Forerunner, whose call to repentance prepares our hearts for Christ. The Epistle (Gal. 2:11–16) recounts Paul’s bold defense of the truth of the Gospel, and the Gospel (Mark 5:24–34) proclaims the healing of the woman with the issue of blood, whose faith drew power from the Lord. May the prayers of today’s saints strengthen us in steadfast confession, purity of heart, and unwavering trust in the mercy of Christ.

On this Leavetaking of the Dormition, the Church gently concludes her month‑long veneration of the Most Holy Theotokos, reminding us that the mystery of her falling asleep is not merely commemorated but allowed to permeate the heart until it becomes a quiet, steady consolation. The Synaxarion today places before us Martyr Lupus, who received baptism through a miraculous outpouring of water before his beheading, and Hieromartyrs Irenaeus and Pothinos, pillars of early Western Orthodoxy whose steadfastness preserved unity and truth in times of confusion. Their witness joins the Gospel’s call to humility and the Epistle’s exhortation to faithful stewardship, teaching us that true honor in the Church is found not in titles or outward display but in obedience, purity of intention, and the courage to serve. As we bid farewell to the Dormition feast, we are invited to carry its peace into our daily labor, trusting that the Mother of God continues to shelter the faithful and guide them toward her Son with quiet strength and maternal love.

Today we honor the Apostle Thaddeus, the holy disciple who brought the light of Christ to Edessa and completed the healing of King Avgar, revealing how apostolic preaching perfects what divine grace begins; we also commemorate Avram, Archimandrite of Smolensk, whose ascetic life teaches us that quiet fidelity and hidden labor in Christ build the true strength of the Church; and we venerate the Martyr Bassa and her sons Theognis, Agapios, and Pistis, whose steadfast confession in the face of torment shows that faith is stronger than fear, family bonds are sanctified in Christ, and the witness of one mother can strengthen generations. Their lives together proclaim that the Gospel is spread through preaching, preserved through ascetic struggle, and sealed through martyrdom. As we continue in Tone 5, the Church calls us to discernment, sobriety, and courage, remembering that the Lord who strengthened Thaddeus, Avram, and the holy martyrs also strengthens us to bear His image faithfully in every circumstance, rendering unto God the things that are God’s—our hearts, our choices, and our whole life.

Today we celebrate the Ecclesiastical New Year, the Beginning of the Indiction, the cycle by which the Church orders her liturgical year. We also commemorate the Holy Martyr Andrew Stratelates, the valiant commander who, confessing Christ openly, led his soldiers into baptism and martyrdom. Pursued by the pagans, he and 2,593 Christian soldiers were slaughtered for the faith, receiving crowns of victory. Their witness stands as a radiant proclamation that the Church’s year begins not in earthly prosperity but in the steadfast confession of Christ.
The Epistle for the Indiction proclaims the Lord’s sovereignty over creation and time, while the Gospel calls the faithful to spiritual vigilance as the new year begins. The hymns of the day glorify the martyrs’ steadfastness and invoke God’s blessing upon the year now opened.
