Southern Baptist Convention President W***y Rice has announced the formation of a commission to "achieve greater clarity and consensus" on the issue of women in pastoral ministry. The SBC Presidential Commission on Women Serving in Pastoral Ministry will be chaired by Juan Sanchez, a pastor who has pushed for an amendment strengthening the denomination's stance against women serving as pastors. Rice said he wants the commission to explore how the prohibition will be "applied and enforced."

The commission includes Denny Burk, H.B. Charles, Ryan Fullerton, Donna Gaines, Betsey Gomez, Ben Lacey, Aaron Menikoff, Josh Powell, and Adrian Taylor. Rice expressed confidence that "the overwhelming number of Southern Baptists today already stand together on these issues." He added, "I am convinced that Southern Baptists are convictional complementarians and overwhelmingly support the language of the Baptist Faith and Message that the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture."

The SBC has debated women in ministry at several recent annual meetings. In 2023, messengers approved an amendment to add language barring women from the pastorate to the constitution. However, amendments require a two-thirds majority vote at two successive annual meetings, and the measure failed in 2024 and again in 2025. At the 2026 meeting, Albert Mohler brought a new version dubbed the Truth and Unity Amendment, which passed its initial vote and will be voted on again in 2027.

The commission is set to give a preliminary report to the SBC's Executive Committee at its February meeting. Rice said he senses "no erosion among the grassroots" and is hopeful the amendment will pass in Indianapolis. "I think some people want reassurance that we are not intending to go beyond what the BF&M has clearly stated, while others want reassurance that Southern Baptists will take this convictional boundary seriously," he said.
