In 2014 the kitchen ministries of Five Loaves Two Fish was made possible by a construction and equipment grant of $175,800 from Mat-Su Health Foundation. Good Shepherd members donated in-kind labor valued at $62,000, and donated $5,000 to furnish the utensils and small equipment. In addition, grants were received from Wal-Mart, American Seafood's Co., Three Bears Groceries, Alaska Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church, MEA Charitable Foundation, and Mat-Su Food Bank. Good Shepherd members continue to support monetarily, and with fundraising events. The success of the kitchen mission is also made possible by the devotion of many volunteers who have helped cook and deliver 10,000 meals over the last 2 years! The mission of feeding the hungry in our community is not finished, and in fact the need continues to grow. The hope is for Five Loaves Two Fish to be sustained and even grown to meet the ongoing needs of our community, through giving from our community. In order to accomplish this, Five Loaves Two Fish needs "Friends of the Kitchen": community members who donate their time, energy, and/or money to care for the hungry in the Matsu Valley. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s Holiday Market is next Saturday, October 10th from 10-4! With free admission, you can have a leisurely time of shopping from our many vendors, the new and gently used items in our Women’s Booth, our drawing of lovely wood items, and our silent auction!

Our Five Loaves Two Fish Kitchen Ministry provides 100+ meals every week to clients of our partner agencies. We would love to have you join our crew to bake or help with food prep every week on Thursday or Friday mornings, or as often as you can. We also need someone who is willing to deliver a few weekly meals to members or friends of our congregation who are facing medical or personal challenges. All you need is a Food Handler’s Card which can be earned quickly online. If you are able to help, please email us at [email protected]. Together, we are sending out love and support through nutritious meals to our hungry neighbors!

Our Five Loaves Two Fish Kitchen Crew were working hard today at the Primary Election Polls at the Menard Center. Our Kitchen Ministry is one of numerous non-profits throughout Alaska who earn a stipend for manning the polls. Our volunteers never stop giving, and we are so grateful for them!

Our volunteer who has been baking for us on Fridays for a number of years needs to step down from her duties, so our Five Loaves Two Fish Kitchen Ministry is looking for a new person who would be available to bake on Friday mornings. We also need someone who would be willing to wash dishes occasionally on a fill-in basis. To work in our Kitchen, volunteers need to complete a Food Handler’s Card, which is quick and easy to do! If you are interested in either of these positions, please contact Duane Hanson at [email protected]. In addition to learning new culinary skills, working in our kitchen involves lots of fun and laughter so please consider joining us!
