In this first month of 2026, what are you doing to build for your future? Even if all you're currently capable of is a little bit of digging, let this be confirmation that beginning something is enough—you have time to get to the rest.

In this image from the Religious News Service collection at the Presbyterian Historical Society, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is seen participating in a groundbreaking ceremony for a church in Albany, Georgia.

The ground where he is digging has been broken before, however—the new building is a replacement, as the previous structure was burned the year previous, along with two other nearby sanctuaries. The burning of Black churches was not a new phenomenon, with many congregations being displaced when their churches turned to ash for lack of funding. After the ceremony was concluded at this first site, MLK and the attendees headed to the others. All three of the sites in Albany that had been decimated by hate would see church buildings rise upon them once again.

Regardless of the repetition of such violence, regardless of the hazy, smoke-filled future, MLK and the congregants gathered to watch him break burnt ground once more remained resilient. They turned their eyes to the horizon and held tight to what they saw there. This MLK day, take some time to think about how you might be “Building for the future” through your everyday acts of resilience, forgiveness, and hope.
