Before you decide someone let you down, run the audit.
Every unmet expectation lands in one of three buckets.
1. They actually failed you. It happens. Own it, address it, move.
2. You never said it out loud. You built the standard in your head, never published it, and then held them to it anyway. That is not their failure. That is a communication gap wearing a betrayal costume.
3. The expectation was never reasonable to begin with. You wanted something from someone who was never positioned to give it.
Most of us skip straight to bucket one. It feels better there. Bucket one makes them the problem.
But if I’m honest, most of the people who have disappointed me had no idea what I wanted from them.
Say the thing. Out loud. Before it becomes resentment.
