Our church family is grieving the unexpected loss of Mike “Dish” Disharoon, a longtime and deeply loved member of The Gathering at Scott Memorial.

It is difficult to talk about the history of our church without recognizing the many ways Dish was woven into it. For years, he gave generously of his time and served wherever he was needed. He was a Trustee, youth group leader, usher, Sunday school teacher, food pantry volunteer and so much more, often serving in several roles at once. And his service was not limited to the things people saw on Sundays. Dish and Nancy would come to the church on their own each month to pull weeds, plant flowers and care for the church grounds. It was simply part of the way they loved this church.

Much of what makes a church a church is built through quiet acts of faithfulness like these. Showing up. Serving others. Caring for a place and its people simply because you love them. Dish did that for many years. He played a vital role in the life of Scott Memorial, and his impact remains in the ministries he supported, the people he served and the church community he helped shape.

Dish’s commitment to others extended far beyond the walls of the church. Throughout his long career in education, he served as a physical education teacher and coach, an administrator, and a coach for girls’ basketball and boys’ soccer. Generations of students and athletes were shaped by his encouragement, leadership, and steady presence. It is impossible to count the number of lives Dish touched along the way, but our community is better because he invested so much of himself in helping young people learn, grow, and become who they were meant to be.

Please surround Nancy, the Disharoon family and all who loved Dish with your prayers and love in the days ahead.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 12 at 10:00 AM at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home on Laskin Road. A reception will follow at Princess Anne Country Club at 11:30 AM.

We give thanks to God for Dish’s life, for his faithful service and for the countless ways he loved and served our church and community.

Celebrating Ann & Andy 💛

This past Sunday, we had the opportunity to celebrate two people who have given so much of themselves to the life and ministry of The Gathering.

For years, Andy has helped lead us in worship, sharing his gifts through music and helping create a space where we can gather together in God’s presence.

And Ann’s faithful leadership of Fresh Food Wednesday has helped turn compassion into action week after week, welcoming our neighbors and making sure families in our community are met with food, kindness, dignity, and love.

Their impact can be seen in so many moments over the years. In worship. In service. In friendships. In laughter. In countless Wednesday afternoons. And in the lives of people who may never fully know how much work happened behind the scenes to make those moments possible.

We are incredibly grateful for the time, heart, energy, and love Ann and Andy have poured into The Gathering and our community.

Thank you, Ann and Andy, for the many ways you have lived out what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ. We celebrate you and the difference your ministries have made. 💛

⚠️ SCAM ALERT

We want to make our church family and community aware of a scam that appears to be circulating locally.

Several people have received emails from someone pretending to be Pastor Devon and asking them to purchase gift cards. We have also heard reports of similar messages involving other local churches and pastors.

Please do not respond, send money, purchase gift cards, or share personal or financial information.

If you receive a message that seems unusual or you are unsure whether it is legitimate, please contact the church directly before taking any action.

These messages are NOT from Pastor Devon.

Please pay close attention to the actual email address of the sender. Scammers can make the sender’s name look familiar even when the email address is fake.

Please share this post to help us make others aware and keep our community safe.

The numbers tell an incredible story. But they’re only part of it.

In July, Fresh Food Wednesday served 3,114 people from 832 families.

Behind every one of those numbers is a neighbor, a family, a volunteer, a conversation, and a community that continues to show up for one another.

Local Sun Magazine is helping tell the story behind the numbers with a feature on Fresh Food Wednesday and the people and heart that make this ministry possible each week.

We are incredibly grateful for our volunteers, community partners, donors, and everyone who continues to support and share this ministry.

💗 Summer of Love continues this morning!💗

Last Sunday, Cindy Cadieux helped us think about the friendships that shape our lives and our faith. We are so grateful for her willingness to share such a thoughtful message with us.

Today, we turn our attention to loving our community.

At The Gathering, serving our neighbors is at the heart of who we are. We feed families, provide clothing, welcome children, pray with people, and show up in countless ways. But what if Jesus is inviting us to go even deeper?

What does it look like to move from simply serving our neighbors to truly knowing them? To create a community where strangers become friends, people find belonging, and Gather. Grow. Love. becomes the way we live together?

Join us for worship today at 10 AM as we continue our Summer of Love series and explore what it means to love our community through both action and authentic relationship.

And if you missed Cindy’s message last Sunday, or would simply like to hear it again, you can listen anytime on our website.
