Today, Smith Street Baptist Church has the privilege of celebrating Eli Poole and Wyatt Bruce as they step into the role of Deacon. We are thankful for their willingness to answer this call and serve the Lord by serving His church.
The Bible makes it clear that being a deacon is much more than holding a title—it is a position of service, responsibility, character, and faithfulness. The word deacon comes from the idea of a servant or minister, and Scripture gives us a clear picture of the character expected of those entrusted with this responsibility.
According to 1 Timothy 3:8–13, a deacon should be:
* Worthy of respect and dignity
* Sincere and trustworthy in speech
* Self-controlled
* Not pursuing dishonest gain
* Firmly grounded in the faith with a clear conscience
* Tested and proven faithful
* Faithful in his marriage
* A godly leader within his home
* A man whose life and testimony reflect Christ
We also see the heart of servant leadership demonstrated in Acts 6:1–7, where faithful men were chosen to help meet the practical needs of the church so that the entire body could be strengthened and the ministry of the Gospel could continue.
A deacon is called to serve rather than be served—to support the ministry of the church, care for the needs of its people, promote unity, assist church leadership, and faithfully serve the body of Christ wherever there is a need.
Jesus Himself gave us the greatest example of this kind of leadership:
“Whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.” — Matthew 20:27
Eli and Wyatt, we pray that the Lord gives you wisdom, discernment, humility, courage, and a genuine servant’s heart as you begin this responsibility. May your service always point others toward Christ and strengthen the body of believers at Smith Street Baptist Church.
Please join us in congratulating Eli Poole and Wyatt Bruce and, even more importantly, in praying for them and their families as they faithfully serve.
“For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Timothy 3:13 (KJV)
Congratulations, Eli and Wyatt! We are thankful for your willingness to serve. ❤️⛪
