Ready for another Greek root word study to help prepare you for the sermon on Sunday?! This week, not one, but THREE words!

πολεμέω (polemeō), μάχη (machē), and στρατεύω (strateuō)
→ three different words that describe CONFLICT and WAR
→ James 4:1-2, "What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don't they come from your passions that wage war within you? You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and wage war. You do not have because you do not ask."

In James 4:1–3, James uses the language of war to describe conflict among believers. πολεμέω (polemeō) means to wage war or fight; μάχη (machē) means a fight, quarrel, or conflict; and στρατεύω (strateuō) means to wage war like a soldier. James’ point is that the battles we see around us often begin with a battle within us. Our selfish desires “wage war” inside, and when those desires rule our hearts, they spill outward into arguments, jealousy, and conflict. Peace with others begins when we surrender the war within to God.

TALK ABOUT IT AT HOME:
> What kinds of selfish desires can start “wars” inside our hearts?
> How can an inner struggle turn into an argument or conflict with someone else?
> When you are upset with someone, how can you tell whether the real problem is something going on inside you?
> What would it look like to surrender one of those inner battles to God this week?
