Until He Spreads His Sukkah Over Us
Sukkot arrives five days after Yom Kippur, and the first thing Yahweh tells us to do is leave the house. We move into a booth that cannot survive a storm, and we call it joy.
This teaching walks the feast from the wilderness to the throne room. We ask why the four species are bound in one hand, and why the willow, the branch with nothing to offer, is required for the bundle to be valid. We look at the word Amos chose when he called the kingdom of David a fallen booth rather than a house. We follow the language of dwelling into John 1:14, where the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and into Revelation 7, where palm branches, the cry of salvation, the sukkah, and living water all appear in one scene, every one of them fulfilled.
Sukkot is not only memory. It is rehearsal. Every year we practice leaving the permanent thing for the temporary one, because one day we will leave the temporary thing for the permanent One.

VERY NEAR YOU
Parashat Nitsavim opens with an entire nation on its feet. Every head, every elder, every child, every sojourner in the camp, down to the one chopping wood and the one drawing water. Moshe has just walked us through the full weight of the covenant curses, the exile, the scattering, the uprooting, and instead of raising the bar he lowers the distance. This mitzvah is not too hard for you, he says, and it is not far off. It is not in heaven. It is not across the sea. It is already in your mouth and in your heart, so you can do it.
This teaching follows that nearness from the plains of Moav into Romans 10, where Rav Shaul names the two errands nobody has to run: no one needs to ascend to bring Mashiach down, and no one needs to descend to bring Him up from the dead. He already came down. He already rose. Along the way we look at the heart Yahweh promised to circumcise Himself, the outcasts He gathers from the uttermost parts of the heavens, and the reason Yochanan could still write, generations later, that His commandments are not burdensome.
